| Got a rude shock the other day on a message board on a website I use. The users are encouraged to give a false e-mail address, if they wish, so other users won't see their real address.
Well, a couple of members got into it; the next thing, the Monitor pipes up and tells them to stop because he knows their real addresses. Some security!
Is there anyway to stop the monitor from seeing my real address?
I use OE 6.0-
Thanks;

| Can you explain this a bit more?
I don't understand how a message board can have something to do with your local e-mail client. And how can you enter two e-mail addresses on a board (the real one and the fake one)?
And who or what is "the Monitor"? Is it the person monitoring the board or is it a feature built-in into the forum software?

| Well, I'll do my best, although I'm not entirely sure I understand it myself!
BTY-the monitor is the moderator-my mistake in terms.
The message board is part of a website that requires members to furnish their e-mail address to join. As members of the site do not always wish to reveal their real IDs on the message board, they have the option of entering fake names and e-mail addresses on posts.
Kind of like this board, where people use handles and generally don't furnish an e-mail address.
I can only assume that the moderator on my board can somehow tie posts to real e-mail addresses since they have that info; I have no idea how they do!
Of course, the moderator may just be bluffing!

| Hi 60,
The Moderators and Admin here can view your profile and get your e-mail addy that you used when signing up. We can also see your IP . No one else has access to this and we don't give it to anyone.
I am sure this is what the Mod on the other board meant.
Cheers

| Just one thing I don't get... The "monitor" offers the possibility to enter fake addresses within your posts, but he complains about that to the members... Isn't it the fault of the monitor?
Suppose the board admin here lets the members choose the background colors of the boards (through "Personal Preferences" or whatever you like to call it) then he shouldn't complain when members do it.
Or am I getting it wrong?
