| I would like to hear experieces on how you guys have changed motherboards in using Window XP. Like the steps you have used, etc. Give plenty of details.
I know clean installing XP is not necessary but I know a lot will say to do just that. I'm more interested in doing it without clean installing. Thanks

| You are supposed to be able to boot into safe mode and uninstall the old mb drivers then boot into XP normally and it recognize things, I have never had any luck doing so though.

| If there is a substantial 'generational change' involved (jumping CPU levels or even chipset manufacturers - Intel to VIA or SiS), be prepared for a reinstall of XP. I have done this a number of times but have only succeeded where the change was subtle (with the technique Mnosteele pointed out above).

| If the motherboards have different chipsets you won't be able to boot into the OS in safe mode or normal mode.
If the chipsets are different there are a couple of workarounds documented by Microsoft and other sites.
Option 6 in the attached link is the simplest:

I've never been successful using this method either. What HAS worked for me, though, is to delete all the drivers BEFORE shutting the system down to change the MB . This way, Windows will detect the new hardware on bootup and attempt to install the needed drivers. It may take a few reboots before things work properly, but at least the system DOES boot... |

| Nice to see you Big Juju , I just wanted to say thanks. I did what you suggested today, uninstalled all the drivers from the old motherboard then shut down and installed the new one and it worked perfect. Thanks for the EXCELLENT tip.
