We want to transfer files from a Windows 98 machine to a Windows XP Pro machine.  Both machines have NIC cards so we will be creating a peer-to-peer network and transferring these files, logged on as the administrator on the XP Pro machine.  Is there anything else that needs to be done to ensure that these files transfer without problem?  The files are around 2 GB and the only other method we have available at this time (other than the Ethernet) is to do a serial cable (DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS!).

Thanks!

I'm no networking guru but in cases like you have mentioned I usually just remove the drive from the W98 system and add it as a secondary drive on the XP system (even if I have to remove the CD temporarily).   Then just copy the files locally.

Cheers
Andy

You can also check out XP's Files & Settings Transfer Wizard

Thanks for the feedback.  I've never swapped a drive and I'm basically going with a tech that has no experience in either application.  Since the XP Pro station is a laptop, I would assume that this would make the slave drive issue far more complex.  Should I assume that XP Pro also has a Network wizard that will configure the Ethernet for us?

Physically removing the drive will provide a faster transfer rate but is extra work.  File and Settings transfer wizard is a bit overkill for this task.  You get too much exrtra stuff.

Do yourself a favor and don't use the wizard.  That too, will mess things up.

Just connect the two NICs with a crossover cable OR use patch cables and a hub.  Make sure each computer has a unique name.  Configure the IP address of one PC as 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.  Make the other PC 192.168.1.2 with the same mask.  Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

On the 98 PC, make sure that File and Print Services for Microsoft and Client for MS is installed and you have logged on.  Share the drive or folder.

From the XP, PC connect to the drive using the UNC path of \\computername\sharename and start the transfer.
