Hi guys

So about 3 months ago, a certain someone ran the System Restore feature on my PC.

It deleted everything that was in the user account folders, and left everything else alone (Program Files, System root folder, etc).

Anyways, it deleted everything in the user folders, but left the folders themselves there, and unaccessible. The folders are empty, but I can't delete them!

That is annoying, but its not the main problem.

Theres a particular game installed in the Program Files folder, and it won't let me delete it! It says 'Cannot delete <folder name>: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.'

This is VERY annoying as this game is like 1.5 gb. I tried reinstalling over the files, but it won't let me. Same problem.

I want to play this game, but I don't want to have to reinstall to another directory.

I'm running XP Home, on NTFS file system. The XP user account I'm on has full access rights.

Can anyone help me out?

Ant

Somehow doubt that System Restore is the reason. Normally it is one of the principles of System Restore to leave the user documents alone, not the other way round.

To get access to the folders you may have to take ownership. For XP Home, boot into safe mode and log in as administrator. Next right click the folder you can't access. Click sharing and security > security > advanced > owner. Change the owner to your username and check "replace owner on subcontainers and objects".

Hope it works. Not exactly sure this is the problem.

Hi antc101, Welcome to the board.

If no joy with taking ownership, you may be able to delete the folder using this method and then reinstall the game.

This is copied and pasted from the *old* forum. I beleive it was Guru that posted it but I may be wrong.

Typically, it is not possible to rename or delete files or folders that have leading or trailing spaces. If you try to rename or delete these folders of files, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Error renaming file or folder

Cannot rename file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.
-or-
Error deleting file or folder

Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.

In windows open a prompt window then navigate to where the folder is. In the command prompt of the directory that contains the folder you want to delete type DIR /x and press enter. This should give you the "DOS" name of the folder.
Now open task manager\processes & close 'explorer'. Leave task manager open. Now back to the prompt window & type rd  . (name of folder.) Press enter. Go to task manager\applications & start explorer again. It should now be gone.

or

use this command RD \\.\C:\(PATH TO FOLDER) \ (FOLDER NAME FROM ABOVE)

Cheers

You should also be able to delete them if you boot up in safe mode.
