| This is a case of the W32.SoBig.b@MM Virus. . .(Blaster Worm)
My friend came to me with his computer, asking me to fix, it, because he had a virus. . . So I tell him it wouldnt be a problem, and to just leave it here over-night, things would work out. . .
First off, I open his computer, to see what's going on. . . The computer initiates itself, loads Bios commands, and just about when it's about to load Windows, it restarts itself. . . "OK" I say, i'll just plug his HDD into my computer, as slave, and get rid of the Virus from there. . . I plug it in, boot it up, and I get the Symantec Removal Tool, and some other tools that are supposed to remove the worm.
The tools claim to have worked, on the final report of all the scans, it said that the worm had been found in 1 file, and it has been removed from the computer. . . .
So I put his HDD back in his computer, I hit the power button. . .It starts loading, and BAM, restarts itself again. . .
So i'm thinking "ok well, there has to be some hidden files for this virus, files that even the good ppl at Symantec couldnt detect". . So I decide to Format his hard disk drive. . . Seeing as how, even a boot disk doenst help the fact that it restarts, I have to plug it back into my computer. . . I do so, and reformat his hard drive no problem. . .
I plug it back in his computer, nice and reformated (twice). . I'm starting the windows XP install. . .and. . . Once again, the computer goes back in the endless restart loop. . .
After that, I'm thinking, maybe the virus is in the CMOS, so I reset that off the motherboard. . .and it still restarts by itself. . .
HELP!?. . .I have No Idea what to do. . .
Thx Ahead. . -Maximus. . .

| If you are getting restarts during the XP installation, then this is a problem with drivers. Not likely that any virus wrote to the BIOS.

Ok, but, how do I change the drivers, if I dont have an OS yet. . .??? Oh wait. . I guess I could plug it back in as slave, or even just try it as master, and remove my own HDD (because it seems to have worked to reformat it). . .From there install Win XP, and then update the drivers with the ones for HIS video card??? Would that work? Can I install drivers for a video card that I don't have, As in, I have a different one running. . .
Other then that. . Is there a way that I could change drivers without being able to keep my computer on more then 5 seconds??? >=|
Thx for the help . . . -MIX

| You cannot update drivers until the OS is installed. You can make them part of the installation CD, but that is a complicated process.
A piece of hardware is causing this. Is there a Soundblaster card in there?

That he does. . . I'll go ahead and test things out without it right now. . .

| Ok, Just for a test, to see if the Sound Card could be the cause of this problem. . .So I just took the card out, and booted it up. . . The computer still restarts by itself :S . . .
