| | I've got a friend coming over so I can set up her laptop for recording from microphone. Her Toshiba laptop has a built in mic, but we are going to use an external USB microphone so I will need to disable the built in microphone. I've only worked with external microphones, so I'm wondering where I will disable the built in mic from. Since it will be a quick visit (I'll only have an hour to do this) I'm trying to figure out how to do this ahead of time. I'm concerned that disabling the microphone input (in the audio driver) will disable both of them. Would the two mics show up as separate entries in the audio control software, so I can disable the one that is not needed? Not sure what audio hardware is in the laptop, so I can't give any more info til I see it. The recording software I'm familiar with, either Harddiskogg or Audacity, only allows limited control of the input, it depends on Windows and the audio driver to control input devices. Thanks for any ideas. |

| Most built-in devices on Notebooks can be disabled in the BIOS, keeps the Operating System from seeing them. And you can Disable or Uninstall devices in Device Manager.

| | Thanks Berton, but I'd already checked my Acer laptop bios. The built in mic is not shown in the bios. In fact the only hardware that you can disable in bios is the infrared port. The manuf's do that so that people can't mess up their computers and then call tech support. Also on my Acer I do not see the mic listed in Device Manager. I looked quite a bit in there to try to find it. |

| In XP, (details fuzzy *running Vista, lol*). If you go into Sounds in the Control Panel, you should find a recording, playback or similar tabs which will let you select the default device for mic's.

| | Are you thinking it would show both mics, and I could enable/disable them independently? That would be nice. |

| | OK thanks. We had to cancel our meetup for today. Once I get a look, I'll let you know what I find. |
