| Hi there.
I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but I'm seriously hoping someone can help me out with this problem and perhaps suggest some trouble shooting steps.
My system specs are as follows:
Windows XP Pro SP3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual
Core Processor 3800+
2GHz with 1 GB RAM
Radeon X1650 Display Card
NVIDIA nForce Networking
NVIDIA Network Bus
Built-in REALTEK Sound System
My problem is during the Windows XP start up. The RAM check and everthing else works ok, but when the Windows XP logo shows up with the blue slider beneath it, the PC would either:
1) hang with the blue slider moving left to right for two / three times then suddenly stop moving, or
2) the blue slider would just keep moving and the HDD light would come on without blinking and nothing happens.
I can go into Safe Mode. Sometimes, the PC would boot up normally after going into Safe Mode first, but there are times when it just hangs again when trying to boot up normally.
What's strange is that when my PC is started, I can Restart (Start --> Turn off Computer --> Restart) the PC without any problems. But when I Turn Off my computer completely and turn it back on 10 minutes later, the PC will hang.
This happens even with a fresh install of my Windows XP. I've formatted, re-formatted and reinstalled Windows XP for up to eight times but the problem persists.
There are no bad sectors in my HDD.
Can someone out there help me? Please? I'm getting desperate.
Thank you in advance. |

| Have you tried msconfig and removed all startup items and see if you boot normally several times?

| Try doing a Selective Startup,it may narrow it down as to what may be causing the problem.
Click on Start>Run,type msconfig then press Ok.
In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
Click the Services tab.
Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
Click Disable All, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
Starting with the first available check box: 'Process SYSTEM.INI File'.
Select each check box one at a time, and restart the computer as prompted until the problem is reproduced.
Doing this you may be able to find out whats causing your issue.

Thats 'a' symptom of either a failing hard drive, cable or controller.

Have you tried running a destructive format from the hard drive manufacturers web site? A microsoft format does NOT format the drive. It reads the sectors looking for 'hard' errors then zero's out the mft to make the drive look empty. A hard error is a crc check and if data is corrupted (logically) does not mean its a hard error. That being said I've seen memory power supplies and system bds cause corruption too. The fact you have have formatted and re-installed 8 times leads me to believe a hardware problem.
Without buying new parts I would first try removing all memory sticks except 1 (if you have more than 1) and try reloading after a destructive format from the hard drives manufacturers web site. If it still fails booting up take that stick out and put in another one.
As far as least expensive to buy would be a hard drive cable followed by a power supply followed by a hard drive (now may be the time to upgrade).
Good Luck

| Hi exTI.
Thanks for your reply.
My HDD is new actually. It's less than 6 months old.
I'll do what you suggested and replace the PSU and cable. Hopefully, that's the cause of the problem and not something seriously wrong with the motherboard.
Thanks again. |
