When i download and try to open a file from this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sound/list i get the above message. I can play the music from here by clicking on the play button, so i must have the necessary programs, but want to download it so i can hear it as a continuous piece, uninterrupted by buffering. Java is enabled and the icon appeared in the tray when playing or downloading.

Hi sadicote

The file format is Ogg, maybe you don't have the correct codec to play the Ogg format.

Did you see this? Scroll down a bit and there are some down loads available.

...but if i can play the music by clicking on the play button--albeit with buffering interruptions--doesn't that mean i already have the Ogg thingee?

No, not necessarily. I found this:
http://www.xiph.org/dshow/

I would download the Ogg codec and see if you are able to play your music.

Hi Chilly, sorry...didn't work, just tried it...same message. I did not mention that i have uninstalled MS office and replaced it with Openoffice.org. Could that have something to do with it? I had the same problem with a mail attachment my friend had sent me. He asked me if i liked the sounds, (i could view it as a slide show) and i said "what sounds?". He seemed to think that removing MS Office was the reason; as he's a noob like me, i took it with a pinch.

Hi sadicote

Which media player are you using?

I spoke with another member and they suggested trying VLC player.

Thanks Chilly,I have WMP, Nero, and real player and if you believe one more will help, wouldn't mind trying it out. But have you ruled out uninstalling MS Office having anything to do with it? My friend was strongly inclined to think it had.

Edited: Tried it, now black screen with (no video) in white, and then ff stops responding and crashes.

Edited: Wonder of wonders! Uninstalled VLC, tried again, this time when downloading i browsed and chose WMP to open the file with, and got this message after completion of download: [The selected file has an ext. that is not recognized by Windows Media Player, but the Player may still be able to play. Because the extension is unknown to the Player, you should be sure that the file comes from a trustworthy source.

Do you want the Player to try to play the file?] And yes, it did play! So now i am one step closer to bliss/ignorance, but you, my friend, have a techno-puzzle on your hands. Thanks for trying
