| | Hi, I'm new here. I'm getting ready to do some major upgrading to my PC and I'm looking to avoid unforseen problems. Here's my situation. I've got an HP PC from 2001. It's running XP Home SP2 and it came pre-loaded (with XP and some other programs). I've got some other applications that I've added over the years and I would like to keep them if possible. I don't have the installation CDs for some of them. A while back I installed a 250 GB Seagate SATA hard drive and copied my original 80 GB PATA hard drive to it using Seagate's Disk Wizard. I switched to the new drive as my master drive and disconnected my original drive. I figured it would be a good backup in case anything happened to the new drive. Everything runs great, it's just getting a little bit old and slow for what I want to do with it. Soooo....I just bought a nice new motherboard, new processor, new video card, new ram and Windows XP Home SP2b OEM for system builders. My questions are which type of XP install should I do and is there any way I can keep my applications and data intact. I hate to lose all my "stuff" if I don't have to. I'm just waiting for my processor to show up on Monday and then I'll have everything ready to convert next weekend. I appreciate any advice I can get and thanks in advance for the help. Looking forward to a brand new box! |

| The version of XP makes no difference - whatever you prefer. But if you are installing all that new hw you'll have to reformat and reinstall the OS. You can back up your data, but the apps will have to be reinstalled. Don't see any way around it. There is a very - VERY slight chance the OS will boot and run once you change the hw, but it's really about 1%.
