| Hi,
I've always been able to backup/copy using Windows (right click, copy to CD). All of a sudden I get the error "Windows has encountered an error when trying to copy this file, what would you like windows to do?" Then you have "retry or cancel." Retry doesnt do anything.
I tried Nero and the computer either locks or just sits there. My husband bought "Cyberlink Powerbackup 2.5 and we can't get that to work either. For the most part, the computer just locks up.
Thanks for any help.

| | Are you trying to copy a commercial DVD? If it is copyrighted, it will not copy. |

| | No, I'm just trying to do a backup. I had backed up my download folder yesterday to a USB flash drive and was trying to backup my picture folder to a DVD or CD, I tried both. Thing is, I've done this a million times before with no problems. |

| | I assume you have tried a different cd or dvd, right? Try blowing some compressed air into the drive (keep the can upright so you don't freeze things). I guess my next step would be to reinstall the driver for the cd. Go to device manager and right click on the cd/dvd drive and select uninstall. Then reboot and it will reinstall the driver. If that fails I would try another cd/dvd drive, unless someone has some other ideas. Is it a laptop or desktop? What kind of failure did you get with the new software? Same message? Were you previously using Windows built in burning capability? Maybe try downloading a Nero trial version or a free cd burner like ImgBurn, to see if it is a software issue. |

| It's a desktop, fairly new. I have 2 CD/DVD drives. They'll "play" but won't burn. I don't get an error message with the software, it just locks the computer. The only common denominator there is that I can't reboot after it locks up, I get a "bdagent" not responding and when I "end now" I still have to turn off the computer, it won't reboot.
I've tried different discs, even went to thestore and got some different ones, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD etc
One thing the software will do is sometimes give me an error message about the disc not being blank (it is) or that it's not loaded (it is), or it's in the wrong drive, (it isn't). I've tried unplugging the extra one (HP dvd 1040). Usually when all else fails, I can just right click and use the windows "copy to CD" but now I get that error message I posted initially.
I'll try the driver suggestion and also the imgburn and let you know.
Thanks. |

| I reinstalled the driver and tried the Imgburn with no success.
Any more ideas? |

| | I'm starting to run out of ideas. How long has the problem existed, and did you do make any changes, installations, that may have led to this? When I encounter difficult problems, I find it is usually quicker to reinstall Windows or restore with the manufacturer's disk. Much faster than troubleshooting, and then you have a pristine installation (which ideally you should image with Ghost or Acronis once it is setup as you like it). |

| | Is it possible to do a system restore to before you had the issue? Do you know of any changes to the system that might have caused this (i.e. uninstallation of a program, removal of malware, etc...)? |
