Hi All

My friends sister asked if I could take a look at her computer(She thinks it's running slow). It has a dial up NIC in it. If I need to can I install my NIC in her comp. to access the internet? I have a cable connection to the internet.

The computer is an E machine T3604 running Vista basic

If you can figure out your NIC brand and drivers, you should be just fine. For the love of the good lord above, make sure you have the drivers before you yank it out of yours, lol. I have had a few issues where it asked me for a driver for hardware that was already installed when I removed and then installed it later.(same OS install btw). XP was alot more the cuplrit as Vista has only done this with my printer. If you have the drivers, then make a note of your NIC settings that work with your broadband connection. With those items on disk/paper, you should be 100% good to go!

I would check the TCP IP v4 settings on there. My old cable was just to retrieve auto and dns auto as well, but all providers have their own settings.

Does that mean you are going to use your broadband connection for testing then later put the modem back in hers? BTW there is no such thing as a dial up nic. You really shouldnt need any setting for the nic but I would write down all the dial up phone numbers etc from the modem. The setting for the broadband are dished out from the ISP such as ip address, netmask, dns server addresses and gateway. Most important you do need the drivers for both the nic and the modem.

Hi exTI Thank for the reply.

The computer or internet connection??

She said the internet connection is slower than before.

I wasn't going to pull her modem out. I was just going to put my NIC in an open slot.
The computer has a couple of issues, no sound(No device installed). She has McAfee & no money,
I was going to re-install Vista home, in-stall my NIC, AVG, and get all the up-dates for Vista, AVG, and whatever else needed to be up-dated.

I told her the comp. has 512Mb of RAM and the the on-board video is using some of that, and that she should get at-least another 512Mb of RAM.

Hi Chilly
I'm not sure what your going to prove by putting your nic in her computer. Other than broadband is faster. To check her internet connection I would try the 'dial-up' from your place. In the Chicago area there are some towns where the phone co. has capped the 'copper dial-up line' at 26kbps. So a 56k internal modem wont be faster than a 28.8k modem. They may have capped the lines in her area and not yours - just make sure you find a local dial-up number. That being said if you have voice over ip at your place the dial-up most likely wont even work (like me).
Good Luck
Cant stress enough as Access Denied already stated make sure you have a working set of drivers for your nic.
Has she tried a different local dial-up number??
