Hi Gurus:

Put the old hard disks in the new computer, at boot after selection of safe mode/normal mode, it loads up drivers and then gives error message:
"Check for viruses, remove the newly installed drives or hard disk controllers. Error 0x00000078 (0xF78E0528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

Particulars of both old and the new systems:

OLD
BIOS: COMPAQ - 20020913 686P2 v3.14 Dt. 09/13/02
CPU: Intel Pentium III, Code name Coppermine, Clock 866.67

NEW
Desktop PC HP Pavillion 500
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies Ver. AM37308 Dt: 12/16/2002
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Freq 1998.38MHz

Hard Disk Drives: WDC WD205AA and Maxtor 6Y080P0

I can access the drives through Puppy Linux, the drives are fine and the data in them is accesible fine too. I am a novice in Linux. I do have the windows installation CD, but i am afraid that I may destroy my data (lot of SWs installed and configured). Resetting the new computer BIOS is also an option :o .....which i am leaving upto you guys to guide me.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards;

The old drive has the drivers for the old hardware. Your best bet is to try doing a repair install of Windows. That is a long shot though. I've had to start over from scratch several times doing what your trying to accomplish. The repair is the second repair option when you boot to the Windows CD. It will leave all the software and setting in tact. Good luck!

You would have to get one of them to boot in the new pc first. Then you could try the copy. The repair install I mentioned will let XP install the drivers for the hardware it detects in your new pc. Without the repair to make the drive work, copying the drive will result in the same error on boot as you have now. I would repair the drive you had windows installed to on the old pc and get it working. Then you could try to "clone/copy" to the new drive of your choice. Again, this is all counting on the repair actually working.

EDIT: I just re read your post and I think you want to format a new drive and install windows, then copy your "data" over? If that is the case, you can do that within windows after you get your format/install completed. Just keep in mind you will have to install all your programs again, plus all settings you had will need to be configured again. Hope this helps.
