The number one thing you can do to speed up your computer, regardless of your computer's hardware, is to keep it as clean & lean as possible.

This means don't install countless program after program, always empty the recycle bin, clear out your browser's cache, and stay away from the P2P programs. They are notorious for silently installing spyware, malware and other nasty items. Warez sites are also a haven for bad things as well. And if you download a virus, who knows what it'll do to your machine to slow it down even further?

The bottom line is to keep your C drive as clean as possible. If you find that you don't use a program you have installed any more, uninstall it completely and free up hard drive space, as well as system resources.

The less programs you have installed and running, the faster it will perform.

Hi gerielouis

Have you seen Black Vipers site? It's his recommendations on turning non-essential services to manual or disabling them altogether.

Download and scan with CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
* Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
* Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
* Clean all entries in the "System" section.
* Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
* Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
* Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
* Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
* Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
* Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.

* Now click on the 'Registry' tab/button on the left.
* Then click on the 'Scan for issues' button at the bottom.
* If CCleaner displays any issues, click on 'Fix selected issues'.
* You'll then be asked 'Do you want to backup changes to the registry',you must click 'YES'.
* Save the backup somewhere safe, your desktop is a good a place as any.
* Then click 'Fix Issues',then click 'Close'.
* Exit CCleaner.

If your computer seems to be slow, try some of the suggestions provided in "Restore Your Computer's Performance with Windows XP" and "4 Ways to Speed Up Your Computer's Performance".

There are reasons for slowness which could be related to disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential.

If you have a lot of startup apps, use a startup manager like Startup Control Panel, Autoruns or Starter by CodeStuff.
If you untick an entry it will no longer run at startup. This will allow you to experiment and see how your system performs with any of them disabled. Some startup programs are necessary so be careful what you disable.

If you are unsure what any of the program entries are or if they are safe to disable, then do a search on Google or at one of the following databases:
Startup Programs Database
StartupList Index
