| After installing XP Pro on my laptop, at every boot up, I always get a menu asking me to select an operating system. If I don't select anything - since I have the choice between Windows XP Pro and Windows XP Pro?!? - a countdown of 30 seconds will complete and the computer will start normally. Is there a way of getting rid of that menu at startup? It's of no use to me and it's annoying.
Thank you |

| Click on Start/Run,type msconfig then press Ok.
Under the Boot.ini tab highlight each XP entry one at a time, then click on 'Check all Boot Paths'.
You'll then be given the option to remove the invalid entry.

| | I don't understand. I have 2 entries I can check and both say they're not valid. The one by default seems to be the "noexecute=optin/fastdetect" (partition 1) one but it still says it's not valid. I can also check the "fastdetect" (partition 2) one (not valid also). Should I delete the last one? I don't have a partition 2! |

| | Which one should I remove? This one: partition(1)\Microsoft="Windows XP Pro"/noexecute=optin/fastdetect" or the other one: partition(2)\Microsoft="Windows XP Pro"/fastdetect ? Note that the second one doesn't mention the noexecute. The first option is the only one I have on my other computer that works fine. Should I delete the second path? |

| Go ahead and delete the second one.
