Hi Everybody

I have Win XP Home,

WDC WD400BB-75CLB0Field Two Partitions C: Drive 20 GB, E: Drive 20GB

WDC WD800JB-00ETA0 F: Drive 80GB

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB USB G: Drive

All was working well when I shut my computer off this morning. This afternoon upon restart the Maxtor shows up as un formated. The Maxtor is seen in device manager and working correctly, USB ports have no ?'s. It is also seen in My Computer as local disc G:. In My Computer the Maxtor used to be recognized as "Maxtor Mini". Size and free space are also not available.
When I double click G: I am told the drive is not formated & would I like to format it.

I have shut down unplugged drive, restart, shut down. plugged drive in again and started.

I installed SP3 2 days ago, all was working fine until now.

Update: Removed & Reinstalled drivers & tried different USB ports, no joy.

Do you think I lost my data?

I recently had the same issue with a family members internal drive not too long ago. It was showing up as unformatted aswell. To recover the data i used a program called "Getdataback NTFS", It works great. The drive may show up as raw to windows but when this scans for 30 minutes up for 3 hours depending on the size/damage of the drive, it recovers a vast majority of the files. I have the link below for the site. The free trial may do the full extent or just show you the files im not sure.

Thanks cash2387

I D/L'ed and installed the program. It is working now. I need to get back some doc. files and I would like to get back some avi. files. I have about 100GB on this drive, the program did warn me about some bad sectors. so far all I have seen speed past are 32 bit hexadecimal numbers "file @sector" and no file extension.

Does anybody think this drive is ready for the trash? I bought it new about a month ago.

Update:

OOOH not looking good. Things are just scrolling by at lightening speed, says
" Error 2 in HD 131 During Read LBa"

I would definitely move all the files you can off that drive as soon as possible. It's hard to say if the errors you see are software related, or hardware related. I'm hoping it's software, because the data in those bad sectors can possibly be fixed, or at least, be allocated to a new sector of the hard drive.

The sooner you get those files, the more of a chance you can recover your data.

After doing that, you may want to run the disk error checking tool in XP. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click on that drive in question. Click on Properties, then select Tools. Under the Error Checking, click Check Now. Under the Check Disk Options, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Then click Start.

After the process is done, see if you can recover any more files. If not, it may be time for something a little more robust if you really want to save the drive, if at all possible.

Hey Ctrl_Alt_Del

Thanks for the info.. I will do as you recommended.

I am using an evaluation copy of Getdataback NTFS, I walked away from my machine for a bit and the program quit responding, so I'll try running it one more time in the morning.

Thanks people

I have also seen the internal cable in the usb enclosure cause that problem. Being a month old it should be under warranty.

Sorry Chilly Willy, I did forget to mention that the program will say errors quite abit, I get passed them by just saying yes to all. I'd say if the program freezes again tho, remove the drive from the enclosure if possible and try it internally. Best of luck to you, 100GB is alot of data to potentially lose.
