| Today I went to Microsoft Update and was shown that SP 3 was available for my system. After following the prompts and downloading, the installation quit approx. 3/4 of the way through. I got a pop up error stating "Access Denied" and that the install had failed. It gave an option to undo, which I did, and my system seems to be running normally. I've been unable to find any info on this error. Here is the error log from Event Viewer:
Event Type:Error
Event Source:NtServicePack
Event Category:None
Event ID:4373
Date:5/6/2008
Time:3:38:42 PM
User:HARVEY\Bill and Kathy
Computer:HARVEY
Description:
Windows XP Service Pack 3 installation failed.
Access is denied.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Help and Support offers no help...says sorry, no info available on this error (or words to that effect)
Google hasn't helped me either.
My system is all up to date via previous Windows Updates,. I'm running Norton A/V 2008. Should I have disabled this during SP3 install? Anyone have any ideas as to what happened and what I need to do?

| All running programs should be terminated while installing an operating system update. Anti-virus programs will more than likely stop the installation process, thinking the update is a virus because it's trying to install or update system files to the operating system. Afterall, it's doing it's job acting in this way.
Try to update to SP3 after a clean boot, meaning just right after it's done loading after a shutdown. Also, terminate any programs you have running in the system tray, (in the taskbar next to the clock) that's not essential to running your computer. Those can be AOL, anti-virus, MSN messenger, Yahoo, anti-spyware and so on. You can usually terminate those by right-clicking on the icon and closing it or exiting the program.

| Thanks for help guys. Once disabling Norton, and Windows Defender, I was able to install SP3. I'm a little embarrassed I didn't do that to start with, but hey, that's why I'm a member here...so when I mess up I know I can get help!
Thanks again
