I have several computers running winxp sp2, all with identical settings as best I can control, because I like the convenience. On 1 computer,a dell laptop, inspiron 8200, when I right click start from desktop and click [open all users], the start menu flashes open and then closes. It will stay open if I depress the Ctrl button, but closes on release. If I right click Start and select [explore all users], the window stays open like it should. All other computers do not have this problem. No other problems seem to be present. I have done all preliminary malware checks and scans and nothing has surfaced. Is there a setting or registry entry that controls this issue?

Not one reply in over a week? Is there a moderator monitoring this?

I saw your inquiry when you first posted it and since I haven't run across this problem before I did not have any suggestions for you.

Okay, let's start somewhere. Has this behavior always been present or did it just start recently? And have you tried a clean boot to see if the issue is present (open msconfig and choose "selective startup", disabling everything from loading)?

I have used msconfig in other cases but I have never disabled all startups, because I believe some are essential. Are you suggested all processes be disabled? If so, won't this prevent booting to some essential programs?

Hi giwatcher

Are you suggested all processes be disabled?

Yes, I believe Allan want you to shut everything off in MSCONFIG. Adding one process at a time and rebooting. Then right clicking the start button for testing purposes. To see if maybe a start up program is causing the start menu to open and close like that.

I understand that. My question is, if I inactivate all startup programs, can I boot up at all, in order to test the theory? If it won't boot, then I am stuck, obviously, and would then need direction about how to reinitiate full startup, and I certainly don't want that to happen in the first place. So someone needs to tell me, if I inactivate all startups in msconfig, will I be able to boot to desktop?

Yes your computer will start. When in MSCONFIG, just un-check only the items under the "selective startup" Tab. Those items under the selective start up tab are your Anti-Virus, Printer Software, Camera Software, Video Card drivers. The computer will start. I would un plug the network cable also.

Remember, shut all items off and add them back 1 at a time with a re-start in between. If with all items un-checked and you right click the start button and you have the same problem I don't think there is any reason to keep going.

Anybody?

Here's a followup. I have been working on this problem for many weeks w/o success. I tried  using msconfig and unchecking all startup programs, and it works. This restores my right click function. I then reactivated half of the programs, specifically the ones I know are valid, like Office, Nero etc and it still works. I have a feeling that one program from system mechanic, a pop-up blocker, is the culprit. It may see the window as a pop-up, which causes it to flash open and then close. As soon as I verify, I will post back.
