I tied to install IE 8.  However, I get a message that an update must first be installed.  When I try to install the update, it tells me that the update I'm trying to install is older than what is already on my system and that I "do not need to install this update."   What gives?  I recently installed XP service Pack 3, and a new netgear update (which resolved the problem with netgear and sp3).   couold this be the problem?  However, it would seem that SP3 should not be a problem for IE 8.  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

What update are you being asked to install?

I have not looked into the new beta yet but according to the System Requirements: OS and Internet Explorer 8 Readiness Toolkit
Internet Explorer 8 can be installed on Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Server® 2008 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

The download page for XP says: Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP Service Pack 2

You may want to read over the Release Notes.

XP SP3 is beta and there is no way of knowing what is or is not compatible with it at this time.

Also as with any BETA software you should proceed with caution.
First and foremost you would be well advised to create a new System Restore point first,or backup the drive if you have Acronis True Image or some other disk imaging program installed.

I'm aware of the all the precautions to take.  I imagine that by my installing XP Service Pack 3, that is why IE 8 will not install.   However, other than this, I'm having no problems at all as a result of SP 3.  My guess is that another update will released in the few weeks and then I can try it again.

Correct. The SP3 beta you installed is what is preventing the install.  You can't install IE8 on a beta build of XP SP3 or Vista SP1.  You must have the RTM version of SP1 if you want to install IE8.  Since SP3 for XP is not yet at RTM, you are out of luck.
