what will happen if the drive is set to turn off automatically during a power profile setting? Will data be lost? There is no mention of this in the article, and it is an important issue to consider before setting this up.

Do you mean setting the hd to power down after a defined period of time? No, no data will be lost and it's a smart thing to do.
