| | My Toshiba laptop, which is about a year old, came with Windows Vista: Home Premium Edition and I was wondering...Is there any way at all to get rid of Vista and put just XP on my PC? Like is there anything that I can do myself to get rid of it, could I try that thing where you can have both Vista and XP, or could I possibly somehow send my PC to Toshiba (which is the company who made my PC, but I didn't order it from) and have them remove Vista completely and replace it with XP? |

| Just purchase an XP CD, format your existing hard drive and then boot to the XP CD and install. It goes without saying that all data will be lost. Also, be sure to download all necessary XP compatible drivers for your system and save them to a usb drive or cd so they will be easy to access once you install XP (get the drivers from either the OEM web sites or from the support area of Toshiba's web site - prefereably the former).

| | For anyone looking to do this, I just wanted to say that you should check and see if the new computer you bought has Windows XP drivers available before you do anything (including buying a new computer, if you KNOW you want to run XP). Some major OEM's do not have Windows XP Drivers for some of the computers that they sell bundled with Windows Vista. Almost every new HP computer does, Compaq's are at about 75%, eMachines don't count on it. Acer does not have them listed on thier website, however will make them available via email if contacted. They do not have them for all models. Gateway has been updating the drivers on thier site a lot lately, and it seems like they are trying to cover XP for most major models. I have installed Windows XP on VISTA released PC's since the OS launched. Since most of the PCs that were originally XP became VISTA machines after launch drivers have not been too big of a problem. However, the newest product lines were never released with XP, and some of the drivers are getting harder to find.

| I can't imagine any hw that has Vista drivers but not XP drivers. Doesn't matter if you can't get them from the PC manufacturer / provider - you can always down them from the OEM web site (the component HW supplier).

| | Unfortunately it is true. I have seen this happen at least a handful of times. It is not ever any of the big name parts like ATI or INTEL chipsets/Video cards, WIFI cards, or sound cards. It is other things like card readers (desktops and laptops), and sometimes on desktop HPs/Compaqs the PCI TV Tuner cards (which are made sometimes by Phillips, and other times by the strangest of companies, which do not even have websites). Also ACER has very limited driver support for any operating system, but it is getting better (Still not good, even for new computers). As their page works 1/2 of the time. eMachines has very bad driver support, but is getting much better since Gateway procured them. I spend about 1-4 hours a day looking up drivers everyday, you are right that most can be found via non manufactor sites like driverguide. But I have not been able to find some drivers for NEW computers and it is very frustrating. -Brian
