| I was talking to the guy who runs our network at work and he told me that SP2 often screws up Internet Explorer. I haven't seen this to be the case on this forum. Has anyone heard of this?

| I am infinity % FOR SP2. It has helped an unknown number of people that would never install any firewall or update their pc. That alone makes me like it. Kind of wish they had plugged RAV they now own in there DISABLED by default, but ask the user if they would like to enable it via the Secutiry Center. I can't even imagine how many right now are clicking that ballon and ignoring it, all the while becoming that latest smtp server for worms/virus/trojans.
EDITED: To anyone with upgrade issues, perhaps you could backup/image your drive, slipstream SP2 with your original XP and burn the new XP SP2, install fresh XP SP2 and see how she goes before you convict it for life, lol. Not saying anything other than my personal experience with SP2 shows the fresh slipstream is much "better" on my pc.

| | So far, except for initially messing up my custom bootscreen, which I found a fix for, I haven't found any problems with it. As far as I am concerned, the more protection, the better. I wouldn't depend on SP2 solely for protection for all the crap out there online but it sure doesn't hurt to have it. If it doesn't sit well with your computer, though, get rid of it just like you would puke up some bad food. |

| AGAINST IT - Those those that have prebuilt computer - I suggest that you contact your support First. I have a Systemax that it will not let me see the My Computer - C,D, drives and locks up. I have already turned off the 1.)virus checker 2.) Firewall - since I am behind a firewall and has created problems before I installed the SP2 - 3.) even tried turning off the Auto-updates Rebooted And still same problem, And of course the Tech's at Systemax want's me to do a factory restore and will not answer my real question. What would that Do? Put me back at the beginning and to start all over again. This was the first Prebuilt I ever bought, and the last I got it dirt cheap, anyhow I have always built mine from scratch since 1988,
This SLIPSTREAMing will not work for those that have Prebuilt Computers.
So, I have chosen to uninstall SP2 just do the custom critical updates for now.Since Microsoft has a Critical update every day it seems, I got into the habit to check for one everyday. What a REAL PAIN. Not the checking part, just that they should have written it better before going to market. WAY back When. I am running XP pro,SP1,2.0 celeron 80gig just a year old. And do not use IE6 or outlook of any version. Netscape and/or foxfire in use for all my computers. Always have always will. |

I am saying this coz I am trying to test winxp +sp2 without zonealarm coz I am trying hard not to install zone alarm for some of my friends (55+ age) who will find it hard to manage. |

| I install it on every computer I make. It's even on mine.
My personal opinion:
PROS-- - combination of updates (SP is always better than individual hotfixes)
CONS-- - instead of fixing the security problems with IE or blocking specific items, MS decided to block almost anything (including Flash, any JS onload actions, mouseover events, conditional comments, HTC behaviors, etc); I'm not using IE as my personal browser but --as a web designer-- I need to check my sites in it so to see everything (all the workarounds for IE) fail really is a pain - numbers are sorted in a weird way in Explorer; 2 comes before 100 - when creating a new file or folder and pasting a name into it, all "illegal" characters are automatically removed; before, Windows would still let me remove them manually. This is a problem because I often save files or images from the 'net and like to create a folder for them representing the URL they came from, then manually replacing a slash with two dashes; yet, Windows removes the slashes automatically and then I need to guess where they were
The firewall, DEP and Security Center alerts are disabled, and if my "clients" are annoyed by the pop-up blocker and/or the Information Bar then I tell them how to get around that.

| I think the important thing to remember is that SP2 is more than an update and more of an O/S upgrade. It's over an 80mb download! If your going to install SP2, start witha format and reinstall.Install drivers, then updates, then apps. Thats the way I do it and so far haven't had ANY problem with the over 150 XP boxes I have delt with so far. |
