| i currently use xp pro and i am ok with how it runs but i can't stand
the microsoft name being affiliated with me in any way. i think i
want to switch to linux, but i am not really familiar with the various
versions of or how to use them (when i tried fedora core 2 on an old pc
it was a bit of a debacle) but if anyone has any suggestions on which
version i should try and solutions to issues of software compatibility,
i would greatly apreciate it.
thank you in advance for your time.

| If you have no problems with the actual performance of XP, I see no
need to change. You say you are "ok with how it runs". Changing simply
because of a name seems silly to me.

| Not that it's any of my business, really, but ... if you don't minds me asking ... why don't you want to be associated with the "Microsoft" name?
If you really want to switch completely to Linux, try Redhat first. That's a good distro for beginers.

i see what you are saying, but my problem is with the company of
microsoft, not any specific products, they alomst have a monopoly over
operating systems and several other things.
the reason that i want to switch is that i don't like the way microsoft
does business. and i don't want to suport companies like theirs (ie
walmart, mcdonalds, and starbucks)

| Hmm, fair enough. Although I still think that Microsoft are the way
they are because of the success of their software. Business works like
that. It's a harsh world. The way Microsoft have managed to make it
seem as if there is no other Operating System out there is good
business, that's why they're such a successful company.

| Whatever. Let's not get into philosophical discussions about big business.
Follow Vectors advice re: Redhat. Enjoy.
