| | When I try to install or modify software that uses the Windows Installer, I get the message Visual C++ Library / Run time error / Program: c:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. The host computer is an HP Pavillion a1648x running Windows XP media edition. The error was first noticed after migrating software from a Dell Dimension 4550, running XP Home Edition, using Laplink PCMover. (However, I ran only three software installs on the HP Pavillion prior to the software move -- IE7, Aloha Bob PC Relocator, and Laplink PC Mover) checked the Windows XP knowledge base and tried the fix methods in KB31535, KB55175, and KB886630, except for those involving registry edits, which are a bit beyond my sophistication. I also perfomed a registry cleanup using Fix it Utilities 7. None of these worked. Thinking that the problem may be caused by a driver or process conflict, I used msconfig to restart in diagnostic mode with minimal drivers / processes and the error still occurred. I also ran spyware and virus checks using CA Anti-virus, CA anti-spyware and Webroot Spy Sweeper. There were no viruses and only tracking cookies. I am about at the end of my rope. Has anyone ever had this problem? Does anyone know of a solution method or strategy that I have missed? Thanks in advance for your wisdom. |

| I finally resolved the problem. The installer abnormal termination was caused by a corrupted .NET framework. The problem was resolved by uninstalling the .NET framework using the uninstaller (installation cleanup utility) referenced in Microsoft KB922377. With this problem, the windows installer will not uninstall the corrupted .NET framework. Once the corrupted .NET framework files were removed, the windows installer unusual termination messages stopped and things were back to normal. A subsequent reinstall of the .NET framework did not cause any problems.
Therefore, I do not need any assistance with the posted problem. However, I wanted to post a solution in case anyone else suffers the same problem.
Thanks to everyone. |
