| Hey folks,
I've been working with NT since beta2 3.1 and I've never seen this done before (and I'm ex-MS):
If you've screwed up your install so bad that 'last known good' doesn't work, and your box spontaneously reboots - without any message telling you what to look for, AND you don't have a CD or recovery disks - ALL IS NOT LOST.
AS A LAST RESORT, you can apply files from the %systemroot%/repair/backup folder directly (you need a secondary install of NT/2k/2k3 or at least access to the file system and permission to change). You can copy the ComRegistrationDatabase and/or Registry files - selectively - from the "BootableSystemState" folder.
This is, of course, tricky and risky, but if it's the last resort.....
I was able to save an install in this manner.
Hope you never need it.

| The only problem with this is unless you are using NTBackup, your PC will be restored to the condition it was in at the last install.

| I can say that I have recovered from serious problems by doing this, but everything is screwed up. Like Relder said, this reverts you back to the registry at the initial install unless the NTBackup utility was used. It has however gotten me into a completely busted system and be able to move files to another partition/HDD before a format and reinstall.
Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me.
