| Ok I have gone through many many firewalls so here's my opinion:
BlackIce:
Slowed down my computer a lot... much propoganda for a mediocre firewall.
Kaspersky:
Haven't used but have heard nothing but good things.
Zone Alarm Security Suite:
Pure excellence. Blocked everything without much user input.
Kerio:
Once you install in advanced mode there's no going back. Uninstalled / reinstalled many times, just too many alerts.
Sygate:
Good firewall but not too user friendly with the alerts. Unless you know a lot about ports and windows processes some of the alerts are confusing and potentially dangerous.
Overall I say for those looking for an easy to use good firewall should go with Zone Alarm Security Suite. The virus / anti-spyware aren't the greatest but it's worth the money!

| | I've tried about 4 or 5 firewalls in the last year. The most recent one was the McAfee firewall. I did not like that even on the highest security level, Tight Security, it defaults to allowing Internet Explorer and svchost.exe to Full Access, which means it allows unsolicted incoming communications to them. When I changed it to Outgoing only, it would change it back on reboot. On the McAfee forum, they told me that was by design. And I was told that when you leave it on automatic (I had it turned off), where it self configures the applications, it gives ALL allowed applications Full Access. The Norton firewall seems to work OK if you take it off automatic and then remove server (incoming) access on each application. But it is a resource hog. I guess my favorite right now is the Sunbelt Kerio firewall. But I've read that it fails most of the leaktests. While that seems important to me, some people seem to believe it is not. Any opinions on this? |
