I'm trying to fix a problem with a win98/win xp boot problem.  The monitor cable was unplugged accidentaly while in use, and now when I try to boot to XP it just hangs, leaving the monitor black, after selecting WinXP.  I had the same issues on Win 98, but managed to return it to fully operational by reinstalling win 98. 

It retained all of the settings on win 98, but XP still hangs at the black screen. I tried reinstalling it, but it keeps asking me to format before going on, which I'm afraid will wipe out all the info.

any boot/file manipulation suggestions?
