I've been using SpywareGuard for a long time and I know many others here use it as well. I check for updates every now and then, but there's never any available. I noticed today that my definitions date was 1/22/04. Wondering if there might be a problem I decided to peruse the forums at Wilders Security. Here is a quote from admin LowWaterMark:

"The reason for less frequent updates with SpywareGuard is that it doesn't need to update as frequently. Much of its detection abilities are heuristics in nature. They work for many of the newer versions of spyware installers even without adding "signatures" for them. An update is made when there are new items coming out that are not detected that way."

There you have it. Just though I'd throw that out there in case anyone else was wondering what was up with their SpywareGuard definitions.

Heuristics means 'rule based'.

For example: Normally, for an Anti-Virus product to detect a virus, the virus must have been seen before, analyzed and detection added to the signature update files. Heuristics are used as there are some families of viruses that continually change their appearance and it is not possible to detect every variant. Heuristics allows setting up a defined set of rules so if it smells like a virus, and it acts like a virus we can detect it, even if we have never seen the virus before.

Spywareguard works on a similar principle.

I switched from SG to MS AntiSpy when the latter first became available.
