Looks like MS is softening it's stance on SP2. Technet Article 4/12/05

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2aumng.mspx

While Windows XP SP2 will be automatically downloaded if you have selected this option, it will not be automatically installed. Follow these steps to install or decline Windows XP SP2.

1.

Once the download is complete, a message box will appear, saying “Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates.” Nothing will happen until you click on this box.

2.

When you click on the box, the Automatic Updates dialog box appears and asks you if you want Express or Custom install. Click "Next" at this point to install Windows XP SP2.

3.

If you do not want to install Windows XP SP2, click Custom, then uncheck (deselect) the reference to Windows XP SP2. A box will prompt: “Don’t show me this update again.” You must check (select) the option to not show the update again, and click OK. At this point, Windows XP SP2 will not be offered again.

It should be noted that not all machines (without Windows XP SP2 already installed) will see the SP2 download notification immediately. This will roll out on a gradual basis over about a week’s time.

It's more like Microsoft is modifying their approach. My feeling is that XP systems without the SP2 Service Pack will be, at some point in time, restricted from future upgrades.

Well Yeah, Longhorn is coming out soon so . . .

One disturbing thing I read about Longhorn is that the end user will have less control over the OS then you have now in XP.

I have mixed feelings regarding Longhorn as well. In addition to the control issue you mention, I just plain don't like the GUI.  It looks like crap. Unless Microsoft makes some substantial improvements it will be a long time before I invest in Longhorn. I do like the code name, but MS will probably change it to some ****amamie acronym.

I just finished building a new system and invested in the full, retail version of XP Pro which includes SP2. Not the least expensive way to go, but I sure don't have any SP2 issues.

Not getting kinky here but, I been looking at other alternatives.

They say this distro is looking pretty good, should be complete in a couple more versions. Apple OS is not my style, but a dual boot with something like Xandros might be doable.

Update to post on 4/28/05

Started Auto-Update service yesterday, went to Windows Update web page & downloaded 7 critical updates including the msi installer. Boink, after reboot I was immediatly asked to install SP2. Had to click cancel. Went to Windows Update website again and looked around for the checkbox to deny SP2. It's not there. Just a learn more info about SP2 dialog button.

Just so ya know.
