| Ok here it is...
My Dad's boss at work suspects she has the virus. So she has disconnected her computer from the internet. Before she reconnects it, she wants to 'fix' the problem. I have heard no symptoms or anything about her computer. I suspect she doesn't even have the virus, but since the media blast about it, she has remained off-line.
My Dad wants me to put all the necessary utilities to clean and patch up her computer and put it on a disk. Now, I need all of you guys' help on what to include, and some instructions to give her. Again, I do not even know if she has it, but I'm making this CD to fix the worst possible case.
So heres what I was thinking to include on the CD:
1. Symantec's removal tool. Here
2. Microsoft's Patch. Here
3. Extremely detailed README file to tell her e.x.a.c.t.l.y. what to do.
I need most of the help on the instructions. I was thinking:
1. Leave your computer disconnected from any source of the Internet (modem phone cable, ethernet cable) 2. Run *patch* and follow all on-screen instructions. (maybe more detail?) 3. Run *removal tool* (need help here...never used it...) 4. Reboot 5. Connect to the internet and update your Anti-Virus software. 6. After Antivirus is updated, disconnect from the Internet 7. Run a full system scan with your Anti-Virus software.
That it?

| I stickied this since I'm betting on a lot of people asking how to do this, EXCELLENT post Stenoaux.
I've fixed it multiple times today already and have many clients who have called me. I guess nobody listens to me when I say "every other week you need to run Windows Update.....", I guess they would rather pay me to fix their mistakes, oh well makes me $$$$.

| I wouldn't mind that. There's this computer service thats fairly well known in the DC area called "Geeks on Call". They drive around in nice PT Cruisers, have the whole geek outfit going on (including the taped glasses) and make computer house calls. When this bug made the media, they did a segment on "Geeks on Call" and how they were preparing for the virus.
The "Geeks on Call" people were hyping up what they did by making it sound all high-tech. They were like, "We have been receiving a high number of calls to fix this particularly nasty virus. We have made a CD that will enable us to track down the worm on an infected computer, and delete it without leaving a trace. We then developed another CD that would patch the system's vulnerability from future attacks of the same kind."
Then here's what just KILLS me. They charge, on minimum, $165 USD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So all these poor saps who do not know how to do simple repairs on their computers are being extorted $165 for such an easy fix. What else kills me is that price is mentioned as the base price for a house call. I would never pay that!!
So, should I charge this lady a modest $100 for my services? LOL

| | Norton's removal tool will tell you if you have the virus on not. On execution it will scan your entire harddisk. |
