Hope someone has an idea.
When I was installing my printer I had a problem accessing my downloads folder to get the driver.
I clicked on have disk and then on browse. When I clicked on the downloads folder where the driver is it showed the title "downloads" at the top of the window but nothing in the window. When I go to this folder through my documents everything is there. I had to put the driver on a CD to get it loaded. Even when it was on the CD I got a message that "information pertaining to my hardware did not exsist in this location" the location was Drive D, my cdrom. Finally it did find it and load.
Any help would be appreciated, thanx petefm.

Hello, I posted this question on 7/10 and got a reply from Bulldog. Thankyou Bulldog.

I tried what Bulldog suggested by clicking on all file types and this worked when I go in to add/remove programs and pretend I am going to install new software and then click on browse then downloads and all file types. I can then see everything in the dowloads folder. If I pretend to install a new printer and go through to the box that I can click on browse then downloads it shows downloads as a title, nothing in the box, file name is *.inf, files of type displays - setup information (*.inf) - but this is gray and can't be clicked on or expanded so I can click on all file types.

Any help would be appreciated. petefm

Right first of all does the hardware you want to install have a set up program?

Simply disconnect the hardware from your computer and then put the cd in the drive, if nothing happens go to

Start>>RUN>>>and type "d:" (without the quotes)

This will show you the contents of the disk. Is there anything in that list that tht resembles

Setup.exe, Install.exe or even autorun.ini ?

If not reconect your hardware and windows will detect it, then when it says

"Should windows try to install this hardware automtically" click yes, if it doesnt find the drivers then make sure you have the cd in Drive D and if it still doesnt find it then im afraifd the drivers on that disk are not for that piece of hardware.

Go to the manufactuers website and download the drivers from there.

If you choose the "have disk" option you will have to navigate to a folder that contains the relevant .inf file. No way around it. This driver install wizard, or what ever it may be called correctly, doesn't know what to do with a xxx.exe file.

Most likely you will have to doubleclick the file you downloaded first to install or extract it. There should be instructions on the site you got it from.
