I agree, Kaspersky is the best! I tried Bit Defender 9 standard and noticed it did indeed use more resources along with adding 4 more active services.
Kaspersky seems to run very smooth, like it's not even there. Talk about protection! You can rest assured it does it's job very well.
I've been using it for about a year now. I'm sticking with a sure winner!

Ok, i have tried a LOT of AV programs, and i agree most versions of Norton nowadays are very bloated, and pretty slow. I have switched to Symantec (Norton) Corporate Edition. it is very powerful, and very fast, and provides options for a server, which u can update, while the clients can get their updates from their, as opposed to updating all the machines.

It's great, it is not free though... i also use ZoneAlarm for a firewall, those two complete each other, ZoneAlarm does have a free version however...

I joined this forum just to reply to this thread... I will try not to offend

I had mcafee on my laptop and, while it didn't slow it down much, I got many viruses while using it.  And I never did much on that computer.

On my home computer, I currently have norton 2006 installed and it is actually funny.  Sure, it is pretty good at blocking viruses.  However, I have had more than 20 different computer viruses and never have I had one that has caused my computer to be as slow and unstable as norton makes it.  What I'm saying is:  You're better off with viruses than with norton.  Think about it... why are viruses bad?  Because they slow down your computer and make it unstable.  Norton is like a virus that you have to pay for, wait half an hour to install, and is nearly impossible to remove....lmao.

A funny analogy... HIV is a virus... you get it from having too much fun... HIV kills you.  So, to protect yourself from HIV, you pay a bunch of money for an airtight room and lock yourself in.  You can't have any fun now and you still die from lack of oxygen.  The cure is worse than the disease.

I am currently running a pentium IV (3 GHz) with a gig and a half of ram and norton uses 35-80% of that even with nothing else running but my task manager.  This makes it impossible to have virus protection while playing any of my games.

I'm not saying that Norton is worthless, some people swear by it and I can't argue if someone says it's the best protection money can buy.  I've never gotten a virus while using it.

I am going to try kapersky as soon as I get norton uninstalled (it has been uninstalling for 45 minutes now though the status bar has been full for 20 minutes)... I think it's locked up...

Started with McAfee - too intrusive, resource hog. Then NAV - the same problems. Then AVG Pro and Avast!. OK when we were getting 10 viruses a day and not 27 we apparently get now plus other assorted bad actors.
Now Kaspersky v5 on the desktop and NOD32 on the laptop.
I think I have #1 and #2, however you would like to rate them.

I've been using kapersky for a couple of days now.  It took me 6 hours to completely uninstall norton but I think I got it all.  I'm really liking it so far.  It is doing this inventory thing where, every time I open a program or do anything, it asks me if I want to allow it, deny it, or always allow it.  It was a bit annoying at first but now I've got most of the things that I usually use on the allow list.

Kapersky found 12 viruses that I must have gotten while using norton.  I'm much happier now.  I can play Oblivion, the most demanding game in existence with kapersky running in the background.  Kapersky doesn't seem to bog down my pc at all.

Of course, I haven't tried everything out there so I don't know if this is best, but if you're deciding between kapersky, norton, and mcafee... it should be a no-brainer... kapersky all the way.

The basic Norton Anti-virus program in my opinion is really too basic, for better protection i advise Norton AV professional... As for me, AVG will do great =D.

Over the years used McAfee, Norton AV, AVG Pro, Avast!, and Panda Titanium. Consider best of the pack:
#1 Kaspersky
#2 NOD 32
Use both now , one on my desktop, one on the laptop.
