| I have used 4 different ones and am currently using Nortons. I really don't notice any lag time etc etc..... Any antivirus program won't catch everything at the same time. (Although they all try ) I agree completely with the first post, and also agree that you need at least one if not two antispyware programs running... I also have found, you might as well buy the program rather trying to get by with free stuff. The full blown version will alwasy work better and be stronger... After all it is your computer you are protecting. The dollars are nothing compared to the time, effort and frustration of cleaning or rebuilding your machine after an attack.... |

| For the longest time I been a fan of McAfee AV. I once went shopping for new computer parts and decided to try Nortons. That was my first time using a fully packed AV program. I hated all the extra junk it came with. Before I had just the McAfee AV program with out the other stuff like firewall and extras. So I went looking for other AV programs and downloaded trials and gave them a try. I must have tried about 4 or 5 others. One of the other AV programs I tried was BitDefender. It was all most perfect for what I wanted. BitDefender come as a stand alone AV and also as a Professional package with AV,firewall and antispam in one. I choosed the BitDefender 8 Standard AV. It is in my opinion the smoothest running AV out there from all them I tried. The ones I tried were all stand alone AV's. Best thing I like about BitDefender is the FileZone window. FileZone window shows activity that the program is doing and plus just drag and drop any file/folder into it and it auto scans them. The fileZone window is about the size of your thumb and can be place anywhere on your screen or even removed. One thing BitDefender does not do is scans outgoing emails. But if I send a attachment I just scan it first before I email. It does scan all incoming emails. I put this Antivirus program against any out there for durability and ease of use. I use: Antivirus - BitDefender Firewall - Look'n'Stop (free version) plus using a router Spyware/adware prevention - SpywareBlaster & Microsoft Antispyware Spyware & Adware removeal - Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Microsoft Antispyware and Highjackthis |

| I've generally shied away from AV software as I havent had a pc capable of performing well with the AV software always running. I never keep important work on my pc thus can take a care free attitude. I have had many instances where I have been infected but just used online scans (Trendmicro housecall) to find what was amiss with my computer. I have tried NAV, NOD32 and a few others, but my favourite and the one I am currently using on my new high spec machine is McAfee 2005. Very easy to use and does a good job as well. |

| My advice is this....main stream antivirus solutions such as Norton do well. However because they are so main stream they are the first to be targets for hacking to disable them (destructive hackers do malicious things and when they are focused on that they target the most amount of computers to affect...thus Norton is a major target). That being said an excellent "not so mainstream" product is always preferred...IE AVG or Panda however the more the antivirus program grows in popularity the more of a target it becomes and then it is time to move on to the next not so well know product... I started as a beta tester for Panda about 6 years ago and still say they have the best support out there. You reach a live person easily and for no charge. Because of this and its ease of use to not so computer literate individuals it is excellent. However, for myself I am leaning towards AVG lately because of what I stated above.

| I just went to nod32 from norton and it seems to be doing pretty good. On a side not, I also got rid of nortons firewall and went to sygate and I went from around 40 processes running on avg to about 30 now. |

| I started with IBM's AV way back when. IBM went in with Symantec, and I have been using Norton ever since with no problems. Norton has never let me down and seems to run just fine in the background without affecting my computers performance.
