Can’t delete file in ME -Long Rant -

I apologize for the following writing. It's not up to my personal expectations, but, this has been going on for a couple of month's now and I'm bored enough with it to bother you.

There was a misc. file found in the TEMP dir. Named DC_04. Don't know what it is so I delete it, and it says "This file cannot be deleted...may currently be in use...yada yada yada" Okay, fine, whatever. Reboot the machine.

And, I'll preface your queries by saying that I use Spy-Bot/Ad-Aware/Spwareblaster/NAV religiously, as in, everyday. Nothing, pristine, virginal if you will. The machine is wearing white, okay.

So, after the reboot, I get the same error message. So I move the file to the recycle bin, which I shouldn't be able to do if it's still being used by it's app. but it goes anyway. So, now it's in the r/b, but I can't empty the bin. I get the same message. I try to move the file out of the bin and it only makes a copy of the file. So, now there is 2 of 'em. DC_04 & DC_05. And I can only <del> the copy. So, I'm thinking virus. But everything is up to date and all scans have been done so I press on.

I rename them; .old, .bak., .tmp - No Dice - won't delete. I've zipped 'em, and I've .rared them - can't delete the .zip or the .rar. and - here's the interesting part - if the file's been zipped and I move the .zip file to the r/b, when I hi-light and hit <del> it doesn't say that I can't <del> the zip but, that I can't <del> the file DC_74 (that's the copy that I'm up to now). BUT, when I open up the .zip to see the file, it's like Kaiser Soze, gone. The .zipped file is empty. But the original remains.

Anywhere I move the file, it will only move a copy. I can delete the copies, but not the original, and yet, the name of the original keeps going up by 1. I'm still thinking virus, but can't prove it.

Any ideas?

Hallo,
sounds like you have to hit with a hammer on your
Hd.
when you search google,there is a Photo gallery of
dr. dernot Collins at www.louisville.edu
with dc_04.
I suppose this a virus.
Try chkdsk /r, but the best thing-if all virusscans
failed- delete all partitions, format and new install.
Please write if then the dc_04 is still there.

You could try going to the Command Prompt (MSDOS Prompt) and make your way to the folder that file is in. I suppose you have it in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP, so type:
cd c:\windows\temp
and press Enter.
Then type:
attrib dc_04 -a -h
Press Enter.
Type:
del dc_04
Press Enter.

If successful, close the DOS box and reboot.

Since a reformat/clean install is such a PIA, I'll go with Thomas76' suggestion first and post back. Thanks.

Okay, Sorry it's taken so long, been busy.

I've tried Thomas76' suggestion to no avail. I get the "all files will be deleted y/n" message. Hit <y> then <enter>. Close and reboot and ...

It's still there.

Hold on a second...

If you delete a file and don't get a prompt that the process has failed, then the file should be deleted. If it comes back, it's generated by a program that runs at start up.

Which programs have you got installed?
(Check in Control Panel -- Add/Remove Programs)

I apologize Thomas76 for not getting back to you. I've taken the (easy) way out and did a clean install of XP Pro. That'll fix 'em
