I have put memory in computers and put in cd drives, but never had to search for drivers for sound and video, not up to much on that, so all the help is greatly appreciated and if this is not enough info let me know and I will look more on the chips.

Again Thanks for the help.

RE: NO SOUND WINDOWS 98 SE

If you don't have any documentation for the computer that mentions brands such as Creative Labs SoundBlaster or ATI video you'll have to look at the motherboard for square black 'chips' soldered to the motherboard. They're about 1" square [maybe larger or smaller]. They will have a name and number on them. This is one area where having built computers comes in handy in knowing what to look for and deciphering what is printed.

Looking at this motherboard http://tinyurl.com/763e8, you will see the SiS chip toward the left [to the left of the blue memory slots and down and right from the battery]. Also note the iTE chip at lower left. There may be others on the board and there will be other names, such as VIA, ALi, Intel, etc. There will also be numbers below the names.

The small white label between the gold heat sink and the memory slots appears to be this boards' model number and revision.

RE: NO SOUND WINDOWS 98 SE

Ok where do I get the chipsets make and model or how do I get that? No Im not using a Compaq restore disk. I dont know where to find the make or model of the motherboard either...needing lots of help....and thanks

RE: NO SOUND WINDOWS 98 SE

If not using the Restore disks from Compaq you have to find the chipsets for the display and sound adapter to get the make and model then find the drivers/software for them. Some diagnostics/system information programs read the Registry for what is installed rather than at the hardware level. Can't hurt to try Everest and/or Advisor from Belarc. The motherboard model is usually silkscreened on the board somewhere.

NO SOUND WINDOWS 98 SE

I have a Compaq Deskpro and reformatted it and reinstalled Windows 98SE on it, before I started it it had sound andI was able to change the display settings, but now I have no sound and colors are not right and it wont let me change the color displays or the screen size from like 800x600 to another size. The sound and video are both onboard. I have read and looked everywhere on how to correct this issue and still have not come up with a resolution. I keep reading that I need to know the notherboard make and model to fix this, if so where do I get that information. I have had the computer apart but not sure where to look for the info. I also have everest on the system too, can I get the information from there and if so how? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
