I copied what was on the boot.ini of my backup computer and it fixed everything.

I also fixed the shutdown/restart problem by disabling all files at STARTUP tab on MSCONFIG and only enabling the important stuff.

Thanks for the help and tips.

Sincerely,
~SalokinX

RE: Messed up Services

Your system will not boot without a boot.ini file. Is Explorer set to show hidden and system files? If there really is no boot.ini file you should have a backup copy in \windows\pss. Copy that backup (named boot.ini.backup) to the root of c: drive and then rename it boot.ini

You need to make an image of your boot drive. Invest in either True Image or Ghost. If you're going to keep playing around with things you don't really understand you need an image you can restore when needed.

RE: Messed up Services

I just figured something out that I think it might be serious... I don't have any BOOT.INI file.

Is that serious? How can I fix it?

I'm still working on the Service things, I'll reply when I'm done.

RE: Messed up Services

I'm not sure what you're doing. Msconfig will only reflect the changes you've made in Services.mmc - it's not that making changes in msconfig will cause problems, it's simply that the better way to do it is in the management console. Go to blkviper.com and reset your services to their default settings (make the changes in services.mmc). Then reboot. What happens?

RE: Messed up Services

When I figured out I wasn't supposed to change the services from the MSCONFIG, it was too late. So I changed everything back as it was before then set them to MANUAL using services.msc, but when I check the MSCONFIG, they are still unchecked.

I tried checking them all and then restarting to see if it fix, but after I restarted the computer and opened the MSCONFIG, the options were still unchecked.

Sincerely,
~ SalokinX

RE: Messed up Services

Okay. First of all you should not change services status from msconfig, but from services.mmc (or Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services). Next, go to blkviper.com and you can see the default status for all services.

Messed up Services

Hi. I kind of messed up two things on my computer while messing with the Services.

The first thing (also more important) is that my computer won't shut down or restart correctly. Instead, it will show the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) with an error full of 0x00000b 0x00000 and stuff like that.

The second error is that my computer visual styles I was using (through TuneUp Utilities) won't work anymore. The start menu, for example, is just a plain gray instead of a kind of 3D aqua thing.

What I did to my services was this: http://www.tweakxp.com/article37047.aspx

The problem about changing the stuff back is that I don't know if it was Automatic or Disabled.

I'm not sure if the problem with shut down/restart is the service or the startup programs because I kept changing both the Services (at msconfig) and the startup (also at msconfig) and I got it to work again, but now its not working anymore.

Post of my Startup tab at msconfig:

Sincerely,
~SalokinX
