Registration isn't required for Windows XP but Activation is required, usually within 30 days of installation.

The only thing I've come up with on the 'new computer' issue is Microsoft wanted to be sure the builders/vendors put out computers that take advantage of the capabilities of WinXP MCE. You could read that as wanting the vendors to sell more computers that include WinXP MCE.

Doesn't matter.. After some investigating I found it can be purchased seperately. I wonder why microsoft says it can only be obtained by purchasing a complete system?

Hi everyone. Straight to the point. I bought a pc from a garage sale. It has MCE 2005 on it. It came with no cd's or manuals etc. It's not registered so obviously its an illegal copy. So I have no problem paying to make it legal and I rang microsoft to see if I could purchase a valid license key for the product. After briefly explaining my situation the operator hung up on me. I really like the operating system and have been using it in conjunction with my xbox 360 and would like to keep using it. After investigating the microsoft website I found i couldn't buy a copy from them and needed to buy a complete machine from a dealer to have the software. i don't need a new machine.

I'm not interesting in trying to crack the program or bypass the activation so I am hoping someone here of knowledge can tell me whether I will be forced to reinstall a new operating system or if the software is available without needing to purchase a complete machine.
