I performed that task. Now I have two radio buttons for "Show" and "Do not show". Functions are still reversed. The hidden files are shown when "Do not show" is checked, and the files are hidden when "Show" is checked.

If still no joy,do the following:
Download [b][url=http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe][color="red"]Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2[/color][/url][/b] to your desktop:
Double click on HJTInstall.exe,it will prompt you to extract hijackthis.exe to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
When the install is complete,HijackThis will automatically launch.
When the license agreement appears,select "I Accept" and then click on the "Do a system scan only" button.
When the scan is complete,click on the "Save Log" button,then save it to your desktop.
Copy and paste the entire contents of that log into a new topic in the [b][url=http://forum.tweaks.com/forum/Forum29-1.aspx]HijackThis Logs forum[/url][/b],[b][color="red"] not here.[/color][/b]

Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/[b]Notepad[/b].
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: [b]fix3.reg[/b] to your desktop.
Then double click on the [b]fix3.reg[/b] file on your desktop[IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/29wood/Clipboard01reg.gif[/IMG]and agree to merge the information into the registry,[b]then restart your pc[/b].

RichieUK -

I made that change. Now I only have one choice in the "view" selection, which is to "Show hidden files and folders". It was originally not checked, but the hidden files were visible. I then checked the selection, and the hidden files disappeared. Now I cannot uncheck the button - it does not change when I check it. According to the choice, it should be showing the hidden files. However, they are not visible.

I hate to be such a bother, but I do appreciate your help.

Try this:
First make sure the backup of the registry is still present at:
C:\[b]registrybackup.reg[/b]

Now copy and paste ALL the following text in the code box below into [b]Notepad[/b].

Done.

However, when I restarted, the "Read only" button was again checked off on the hidden files.

The "show" and "do not show" buttons are still reversed, but they still work.

Lets try this:
Right click 'Properties' on each hidden folder.Under 'Attributes' at the bottom uncheck the 'Read-only' box.
Press Apply/OK,[b]restart your pc.[/b]

RichieUK - first - thanks for the help.

I performed the tasks you instructed. Now the buttons "show" and "do not show" work. However, they do the opposite of the described function.

In other words, when "do not show hidden files and folders" is checked, the hidden file show up. When the "show hidden files and folders" is checked, they do not show up.

I followed your steps exactly, but did I mess something up maybe?

Ok,lets try this:
[b]First backup the registry by doing the following.[/b]
Click on Start>Run,copy and paste the following bold text into the 'Open:' space,then press Ok.

It won't appear to be doing anything,that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may have an hour glass along side it for a minute or so.
Please be patient and continue when the hour glass disappears.

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run,type [b]regedit[/b] into the 'Open' space,then press OK
Navigate to the key 'Hidden'.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced\Folder\[b]Hidden[/b]
Right click on the 'Hidden' key and choose 'Export'.
Save it to your desktop.
Now right click on the exported registry file on your desktop,select 'Edit'.
Copy and paste the entire contents into this topic.

Hidden files problem in Windows Vista Explorer

I have hidden certain folders. Until today, I could go to Windows Explorer, click "Organize", click "Folder and Search Options", click "View", and then check the "Show hidden files and folders" button. That would display my hidden files.

Now, the "Show hidden files and folders" button is checked by default, but the hidden files are not visible. I have tried rebooting - no luck. I have tried to click the "Do not show hidden files and folders" button, hit "apply" and "OK", but the choice is instantly reset to the "Show hidden files and folders" button. It appears that neither button is funcitioning (although it does let me click the "Do not show" button and gives me the choice to "Apply", which I do check off. But nothing actually changes and I cannot seem to get the hidden folders to reappear.

This is not a case of the choice to hide or not hide disappearing. I found a solution for that at: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/restore-show-hidden-files-and-folders-option-in-vista/.
Mine is a different problem since the options are still there - they just don't work.

Any ideas????
