Twice, I have followed the tweak instructions to disable the Vista welcome center, however when I restart my computer the Welcome Center still pops up.

I'm helping a friend with her computer... Vista is new to me. First I had to correct her Word DataApp because Word was crashing on exit and cursor was disabled.

Now that's fixed, I wanted to defragment her C: by right clicking to get to the properties, but found out that as soon as I click on a right click choice, windows explorer stops functioning and needs to restart, ANNOYING!

Some sites say it is "shell context menu" issues but I was unable to use Shellview, then I tried downloading spybot SD but that fails to update so also fails to check for problems.

I just can't seem to get ahead, any help from you would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: right-click works fine on other applications, only seems to crash for drives/folders

It's not only EXPLORE that causes explorer restart, any choice among the right-click options causes it...

Hidden files problem in Windows Vista Explorer

I have hidden certain folders. Until today, I could go to Windows Explorer, click "Organize", click "Folder and Search Options", click "View", and then check the "Show hidden files and folders" button. That would display my hidden files.

Now, the "Show hidden files and folders" button is checked by default, but the hidden files are not visible. I have tried rebooting - no luck. I have tried to click the "Do not show hidden files and folders" button, hit "apply" and "OK", but the choice is instantly reset to the "Show hidden files and folders" button. It appears that neither button is funcitioning (although it does let me click the "Do not show" button and gives me the choice to "Apply", which I do check off. But nothing actually changes and I cannot seem to get the hidden folders to reappear.

This is not a case of the choice to hide or not hide disappearing. I found a solution for that at: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/restore-show-hidden-files-and-folders-option-in-vista/.
Mine is a different problem since the options are still there - they just don't work.

Any ideas????

Disbale Touchpad, While Mouse Plugged In?

Hey, I'm looking for a way to disable the touchpad on my laptop while I have a mouse plugged in. I tend to tab the pad with my palm and mess up my typing quite frequently. Or click a link while I'm just about done filling out a lengthy form. I just traded my laptop for a better one at the store and the old one had touchpad settings, but this one I can't seem to find the option to even turn it off 100% of the time.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Sony Viao. Thanks for your help.

Cannot Connect to Network Drives

Hello,

I have a Network Drive setup on my laptop for my shared drive at uni, but when I first turn on my computer because I'm on wireless it cannot connect immediately. So I have this stupid popup and icon EVERY SINGLE TIME I turn on my computer for the last like 4 months that is complaining about not being able to connect to the network drives, is there anyway I can hide this popup?

Runtime Error! while installing software

Hi,
I am having MS Vista Home Premium. When I try to install NI LabVIEW it says:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

X Runtime Error!
Program: D:\LabVIEW 8.5\setup.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

The installation DVD is in D: drive.
I removed all toolbars including google. Still could not able to solve this.

Need technical breakdown of windows Vista Ready Boost please

Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone could give me a more detaild explanation as to what ready boost actualy does. I know it acts as a sort of virtual memory or pagefile I am guessing? does it only help with load times of programs or is there a more detaild change it makes to help. I have 4 gigs of ram and I have my pagefile set to 4gigs of hard disk space. I am running windows vista sp1 and do not have many background programs running. I found a good deal on a 2 gig SD card that many have said works well with ready boost and I was thinking of ordering it but want to know what good it would do. Will it help my in game performance any or would it just waste a perfectly good storage option for nothing? Please feel free to get technical on the details as to what It actualy does. I am sure I will understand.

also is there a good tweak that can help boost graphics performance. I know most of my limitaion is in the gpu itself and only thing I know of that can help that is driver updates but does anyone else know a good secret to make games run a little smoother in vista?

i have vista on my laptop and my windows explorer just recently began to restart after i close stuff like my computer and control panel. the dialoge box says that there is a problem then restarts and ive tried running a diagnostics or whatever on it and windows cant supply me with a solution so any help would be greatly appreciated. (lamans terms plz lol)

Hello, I am new to the forum and I have a question that is driving me crazy...

I was wondering if there is a way to create 2 separate users in vista that have different startup settings. I want to create one general user with all of vista's bells & whistles for general activity like web surfing, word processing, etc., and one user that is very stripped down without any non-critical startup processes (programs) running and all of the fancy stuff like aero turned off so I can have the most processing power dedicated to my audio software. Is this possible? As of now I have 2 Administrator accounts set up and whatever startup processes I disable under one user account, Vista disables the same processes in the other account. What gives?

annoying permission prompts

so i'm new to vista, and i've constantly got these annoying boxes pooping up when i open certain programs, asking me for permission to open them up. I have to allow it, saying that I trustthe program. how can i stop this?

Send_to Shell Extension

Earlier versions of Windows Powertoys had a nice shell extension called 'Send To - Any Folder.'

When right clicking on a file, you could select "Any Folder" which would pop up a box in which user could type or browse for a destination folder for the file.

Trying to load the old XP send to extension in Vista produces an error.

Anyone know if this handy tool is included somewhere for Vista? Otherwise we're stuck with opening two windows to drag & drop a file, or using the command line.

Installing pre-installed VISTA on a different PC

i have a question for you. i bought a laptop ages ago with pre-installed vista. now i want to install that copy of windows (acer laptop copy) onto another computer (non acer). do you know any hacks how to enable that other computer to think that its the acer laptop and activate that product key i have from my actual acer pc?
