Since I have moved on to Vista myself. I noticed that every drive has its own recycle bin settings when you check the properties of the main one on the desktop. I had the same problem as you did once before and that was how I fixed it. Now it doesn't do it anymore and emptying the main one, clears them all for me. I would have to guess a glitch or bug in Veesta that was not worked out and rarely appears. Other than that, maybe someone else with more knowledge than I, using Vista, could shed some light on the issue. I'm just glad I could help out and that your problem is sorted out. Thanks for posting back and letting us know. :D

Access Denied: I did as you suggested and the files inside $RECYCLE.BIN totaled 6 GIGAbytes. I deleted them and the hard drive space updated fine. Problem solved. Why did that happen?

In addition to RichieUK's suggestion, you could also give WinDirStat a shot. It does basically the same thing, but its my personal preference. :P

Under Options in windirstat, you'll have to check "show free space"

Also i suggest you still download/install and run [b]TreeSize Professional[/b]:

This will give you all the info regarding the space used on your external drive.

Have you tried to enable "show system files", then checking the $RECYCLE.BIN folder to make sure its empty? There should be a Recycle Bin folder inside the $RECYCLE.BIN folder. Check to make sure the data isn't lurking in there. Be sure to disable the system files view when done. HTH

Hey, thanks for your response. Unfortunately, since my issue is with an external hard drive, there is no system restore points kept on it.

I don't have Vista, so this is just a guess, but have you tried clearing your restore points in system restore?

I've been reading a little about this at Microsoft. I think it's a common problem.

If you have the MS Windows XP installation disk.
With the MS Windows XP installation in the cd-rom drive,boot to the [b]Recovery Console[/b].
Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive if necessary.
[Boot into the Bios and set your CD-Rom drive as first boot device].
For more information about how to do this,refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.
At the prompt type [b]chkdsk X: /r[/b] then press Enter.
Leave a space in between [b]chkdsk[/b] and [b]X:[/b] and [b]/r[/b]
Replace the [b]X[/b] with the actual letter of your external drive.
This process could take up to an hour or more,allow it to run until its finished.

Download/install and run [b]TreeSize Professional[/b]:

This will give you all the info regarding the space used on your external drive.

Go to the external drives manufacturers website,there may possibly be a diagnostics utility you can download and run.

I had the same issue with a program that I have installed. I was log files for that program. I cleared the logs using the option in the program and the were gone.

I have an external hard drive and I recently deleted a program that was 6 gigs off of it; however, it is still displaying the space available before the deletion. How can I get it to update? I tried unplugging and re-plugging, deleting other stuff--all to no avail. Thanks!
