I have a similar problem for my computer. But it takes about 5 mins at the screen where is says "Window's is starting up". The screen that shows up before you can choose what user you want to log in as on the welcome screen. Sometimes the computer stays on that screen for a lot longer than 5 mins

My computer isn't in the internet so it has to viruses and there is only one program on the startup that I've had there all along without any problems. The PC Booster I believe it is called. A program that I got off of this webcite.

My computer has 300 some odd RAM, 700megahrts.

what could be the problem?

If you have had your machine for a while, chances are there may be a lot of unnecessary programs set to startup when the OS loads. It would be a good idea to use a startup manager to disable some of them in order to save resources and increase performance.

Starter is a good startup manager:

Prior to disabling anything, perform a google search of the program name or check one of these links to ensure it is safe to disable.

I would also recommend that you download, install and run a few free anti-spyware tools. Be sure to update their definitions first.

Have you defragged your drive lately? Hard drive fragmentation can cause slow startup and/or shutdown. You might want to do a disk cleanup and defrag.

If you want to skip the welcome screen like I do:

1. At a command prompt, type "control userpasswords2" and press Enter to
open the Windows 2000-style User Accounts application.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

what file system do you have installed on your computer??? fat32???

because i had the same problem u did before, but it was with a different file system other than fat32( cant remember the name atm) my comp would take like 15 mins just too boot up/shut down.... so i did a reformate and used fat32 file system and it takes it like not even 30 seconds to boot up/shut down now. try that i hope it helps.

1-2 mins and you have 700+MB ram i would really start worrying as any ram above 500mb should be damn right fast, try system restore to about 1month ago so you wont lose a lot of your media , or backup your media office files and everything you want, then do a sys restore to the first time you used it, ( thats if you still have thaat date stored)

When i use to start my comp. it would show the Windows SP2 screen and then show the icons right away, but now it will show the Windows SP2 screen and then i have to wait 1-2 mins. before it shows the icons. The only thing i did was take the side of the computer off. Please tell me any suggestions. Thanks
