Persistent SP2 install error

Alright, I'm new here so I apologize if I'm starting on the wrong foot with this. I'm trying to install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP to my pc so that I can add a video card with the correct drivers. I'm going through Windows Update online, but continually come up with the same error messages. When it backs up the system the message " Cannot copy imjpcic.dll" comes up. I click retry and nothing. I click cancel to continue without that .dll and it goes for a little while 'til the next message which says: Unable to read from or write to the database. Then it finishes the installation process saying that it has failed. I've tried downloading the imjpcic.dll file into c:\windows\system32\dllcache so that it can find it, but to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

hi all. i have a compaq computer (winxp home). And i install sp2 with windows update a fews day ago. and then it told me to restart. so i restarted. But when i went on the internet to see something the internet wasnt working. All the wires all fine, my cable modem is working and on. But i don't think sp2 got install. the secturity thing in control panel wasnt there. and then restarted again a few times. and then a error came. saying windows not found or something. so i had to do a recovery. and everything is gone. what did i do wrong?

I was doing some small tweaks in windows, and in addition I installed some "hardware" (windows added usb drivers for 4 new ports that it recognized). After that (not sure exactly what), my windows xp sp2 has added an absoluletly pointless 10 second black screen before it shows the welcome sign when booting.

I've tried disabling startup programs and services and whatnot, and it still goes to that black screen for no logical reason (humanly logical that is).

Anyone have this problem? or know what might be going on? Or it would even be helpful if I could find a way to figure out what exactly I did to cause the delay.

btw I tried system restore and it didn't fix the problem, so my brain says 'hardware', but i don't know

Downloading sp2 not from windows update

Hi,
I remember long ago that someone recommended a site that let's you download an executable file of sp1/2 with or without addons, and that saves you the downloading time after installing a fresh xp.
Anyone has the site?

When i use to start my comp. it would show the Windows SP2 screen and then show the icons right away, but now it will show the Windows SP2 screen and then i have to wait 1-2 mins. before it shows the icons. The only thing i did was take the side of the computer off. Please tell me any suggestions. Thanks

2 Hardrives?

Hello.. i baught the windows xp sp2 update and i installed it, during the installation i think i did something wrong because i have 2 hardrives local disc (C: ) and local disc (F: ) the (F: ) one has 4 GB well the (C: ) has 32 GB i keep getting a lame error saying i don't have enough space on (F: ) and it's really annoying is there some way to combined them? or any other options? thanks

Okay the computer i baught has sp2, i have windows 2000 professional on a disc and im trying to install windows 2000 professional but when i do i get a error saying that i have a newer version and also says setup functionailty will be disabled from the disc, any ideas or suggest would be nice, thanks.

Service Configurations SP2

Hey guys,

Just a question. In my services.msc, Windows Audio Service and HID Service are set to automatic but they won't start when I turn on my computer. I have to manually go back and turn them on each time, to hear sounds or use my keyboard hotkeys. Just wondering if anyone knows how to make these services start with the computer. I checked for dependencies of the services and these are all on and working. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Can't upgrade to SP2

hi everyone,

i have a problem updating my computer to SP2. i was able to install sp1 on my computer and my OS is windows xp professional edition. i was able to download the SP2 upgrade but i can't install it. can anyone help me or give me reasons why this problem occurs?. one of my theories is that i have a fake installer/serial # upon installing my OS and so wasn't able to cooperate w/ windows upadate. can i tweak the registry regarding this matter? how?. thanks. i hope you can lend me some help..thanks.

Blue screen of death

in the middle of any process i get the following error (of course on the blue screen of death)

C000021a {Fatal System Error} Logon system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 system has been shut down

i think there might be something i missed please help me out guys....i wanna avoid a format.
also should i just try a repair with the windows xp CD or what????

i also get this but no shutdown or problem

Hi,

After Installing SP2, I turned off my automatic updates,

problem is:

At every startup Alert Appears displaying that your system is at risk & please turn on your automatic updates.

& wscntfy.exe run under background.[I don't want this to run & automatic updates should be totally turned off]

though i tried with services.msc,msconfig to see whether it is starting at the start up, nothing worked.

So please anybody as any solution for this .

SP2 Hell Solved?

I decided to take the plunge and install SP2 on my system and I did a slipstream into XP Pro. I got it installed and loaded up my favorite apps and got it configured to my liking over a 2 day period. All was going fine for about a week then things stated to happen. Programs started to freeze up, rebooting 3-4 times a day on its own, system freeze up, performance down the tubes! Within 24 hrs I had to do a repair install. Well that lasted almost a day before the same problems cropped up again. I noticed in the event viewer the same warnings/errors were popping up. Hard drive timeout,and paging errors, Atapi errors saying something about firmware is old. The worst part was my hard drive kept going into PIO mode!
I started to do google search on these errors then I ran across an interesting thread from a Microsoft employee. He had similer problems to mine and he experimented with switching Atapi.sys files with a different version. He said that the errors went away and things were back to normal. I figured it was woth a try, besides what have I got to lose?
My hats off to the MS employee for coming up with this and all the credit goes to him! I made the Atapi file switch and WOW!!!! It worked like a charm!! No more errors and my system runs great! For anyone that is experiencing what I went through, SP2 Hell, give this a try. Instructions are below.

First you need to get "Atapi.sys" from an SP1 installation (ver.5.1.2600.1135) and keep it in a folder on the desktop. You need to remove the existing "Atapi.sys" (ver.5.1.2600.2180) from 2 locations first.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386

Do a search and remove any other "Atapi.sys" (ver.5.1.2600.2180) files.

In case something goes wrong you need to keep 1 copy (ver.5.1.2600.2180),store it in a folderin a safe location.

Now you can copy and paste "Atapi.sys" (ver.5.1.2600.1135) to these 3 locations.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

Now get into device manager and expand ide/atapi controlers and update the drivers for the Primary Ide Channel and reboot. You may need to repeat this step for the Secondary Ide Channel.

[b]WinXP will ask to insert the XP SP2 cd to attempt to restore the Atapi.sys file, click on Cancel and click on Yes to keep the unrecognized file version.[/b]

Now your system should run smooth once again. Clear all entries in the event viewer and keep an eye on it for a few days.

Another way to get SP2

Is there another way to get SP2 other than through Windows Update? I have a measely little 56Kb dial-up and the program says it will take over 6 hors to down load. Do they make a disk you can get or buy?
