Unable to run Windows Sidebar

I can't turn on my windows sidebar for my vista. This happens after i installed spybot remover. But after i uninstalled the spybot remover the sidebar still can't be turned on.

Occasionally my Vista laptop takes off on some task that keeps the hard drive access light on almost continuously for a few minutes. I'd like to find out what is going on. I don't think it is the antivirus update.

When I start Task Manager, the two processes that seem to be using cpu cycles are tskmgr.exe and System. Does Vista have any tools that allow me to see the details of what the processes are involved in, or do I need to use some 3rd party application (maybe Process Explorer)?

UAC alert - Internet Explorer Add-on Installer

It occasionally happens that when I go to a website User Account Control asks me if I want to allow Internet Explorer Add-on Installer to run. Clicking on Details adds no additional info. Since I don't know what the website is doing to initiate this, I always deny it, and then the site seems to load ok. Any idea what is going on?

vista thumbnail settings question

I'm having a problem with thumbnails in a giant folder of video files eating up so much cpu (loading the thumbnails) when I open the folder that it's pretty much unusable--takes 10 minutes to load them, then media player freezes. I have a dual core 2.4 ghz with 3 gigs of ram. What I'm wondering is if there's some way to set thumbnail options for certain types of files or certain folders only. When I selected "always show icons, never thumbnails" (Organize/Folder and search options/view, top option) the problem went away and performance was good. The problem is, that setting affects all files in every folder on the computer, including both hard drives and all types of media. This is a pain for jpegs in particular, to not be able to see what they are.

Is there a way to...

a) set folder options specific to a folder which do not affect other folders

or

b) set thumbnails to load on jpegs but not video files

Task bar behavior

On previous computers with XP, I have always had the taskbar hidden, and when I need to drag something like a link or file from the active window into an inactive window, I drag it down to the taskbar which then pops up. Then I hover over the desired window on the taskbar and it opens, allowing me to drop the item into it.

I find that on my Acer laptop with Vista, this behavior is intermittant at best. Most of the time, when I drag own to the taskbar, it does not pop up. I have found a work-around - If I first minimize everything by clicking Show Desktop, and then click the Window I want to drag the item from and then initiate the drag, then this technique will work as in the old OS, (most of time), but that is an irritating extra two steps, and it is hard to break old habits.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? Are there any fixes for this?

User account access policies

I am setting up a vista machine at my school. I want to create an account that allows the user to do NOTHING except access what is on the desktop. I wantt eh account access denied to the start menu, right clicking, deleting, everything, except to access the programs that I put on the desktop. Is this possible? If so, how can i do it? If not, how close can I get to this?

Problems with Windows Media Player 11

Hi everybody, this is my first post here. Ok, I have a little situation with WMP 11, when I try to set the message in live Messenger to show what I'm listening, appears a message box stating that I need WMP 9 or superior; but I have Windows Vista thus WMP 11. I try many things, the plug-in in WMP11 its checked...so I said...i'll re-intall it and sure the problem will gone...and ops!...i can't, cause is part of windows. It's not a big deal if I can't show the message but...I want to know how to re-install WMP 11 in case that other things fails...

Environment Variables Settings problem- WinVista

Hello everybody..I am new in the forum!

I did all tweaks using instructions from tweaks.com and it made a big difference on my machine...GOOD JOB GUY!!

I did also change the settings on the Environment Variables (like the XP tweak), this is what i did (change to) ..

C:\TEMP
C:\TMP

Usually in XP this two variables would appear in "C:" menu after you change the Environment Variables....in my case only C:\TMP appears in the "C:" menu.

Is there a solution to return the setting to its default option or let the variable C:\TEMP appear in the "C:" menu?

I tried doing this tweak on other vista machine both variables appeared on the "C:" menu...its obvious that I did something wrong.

Please Help!

software not Vista compliant?

I read on the Adobe site that Photoshop 7 was not Vista compliant, but I thought I would give it a try anyway. It installed just fine, and seems to work perfectly as far as I can see so far. So this has motivated me to try some of my other older software.

My question is, what will happen if some software is truly not Vista compliant? Will Vista give me an alert when I try to install it, or will it install and not function correctly? or ???

BSOD randomly occurs.

I have just started experiencing the random appearance of a bsod, this can happen at any time and does not seem to relate to any specific programme. When restarting it boots up ok and may not happen for several days, but it has done it twice this morning. When rebooting I get the following message that Windows is recovering from an unexpected shutdown. The blue screen goes so quickly I am unable to read it. I believe that there is a way to be able to read this but I can't remember what it is.

2x Western Digital SATA HDD's in RAID

First a little background, I've been having multiple issues with shutting down and restarting the computer recently. Even after a clean shutdown and a cold boot the computer sometimes decides to run scandisk on startup. I'm slightly concerned that Vista might not be liking my RAID HDD config. I've only just made the switch to Vista from XP after Sp1 came out. Having said I haven't had this problem for the month or so I've had vista installed so it's a recent thing...

The problem...

Whenever I delete/move/copy a file, the little file transfer window comes up on screen. Problem is when its finished its task it stays there and doesn't disappear. The only way to get rid of the file copy/move/delete windows is to end the task using task manager. Doing this reboots explorer which doesn't take long but its somewhat annoying. Another slight niggle which I believe is an extension of this problem occurs when I try to create a new folder, I finish inputting the new folder name and press enter and the explorer window freezes up. Again the only way to get out of this is by ending the task through task manager. Anyone have this problem and know of a fix? Perhaps there is a way to tell vista to not bring up the little file transfer boxes every time you move/copy/delete something, ie, it just does it in the background?

Windows Explorer Stopped Responding Error

For some reason whenever I try to open something like my documents, control panel, computer etc. I get a message saying windows explorer has stopped working, windows is checking for a solution for the problem online then I get a message saying windows explorer is restarting. I don't know why this is happening it's happened ever since I restarted my computer because it DEP was blocking a program I made myself, and prompted me to restart. Any help is appreciated.
