A firewall serves two purposes. One is to prevent incoming communications that you did not request from entering your computer. Unfortunately a good deal of spyware arrives by your (unknown) request.

The second purpose of a firewall is to monitor what apps on computer are allowed to communicate out. Again, won't keep spyware out of your computer.

So if you want to keep malware out, you need to utilize other methods in addition to the firewall. Since this is a firewall thread, it's probably not the best place to discuss those methods.

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

No single product is 100% foolproof and can detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security community is in a constant state of change as new malware infections appear. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes spyware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Thus, a multi-layered defense using several anti-spyware products (including an effective firewall) to supplement your anti-virus combined with common sense and safe surfing habits provides the most complete protection.

RE: The 'Best Firewall'
Zone Alarm is good. I check for spyware ever day (I use Ad-Aware, SpybotS&D and SpywareBlaster, all updated) and they still find something new every day. I also used VundoFix, to remove virtumonde.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, i just need an answer if the firewall is the problem or not.

Thanx

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

Comparing Firewall Features
Personal Firewall Analysis & Scores

Of course these types of comparative testing results will vary depending on who is doing the testing, what they are testing for, what versions of the firewall software is being tested, etc. There are no universally predefined set of standards/criteria for testing and each test will yield different results. Thus, you need to look for detailed information about how the tests were conducted, the procedures used, and data results. Then you have to consider the features offered by each firewall, the amount of resources utilized and how it may affect system performance.

Zone Alarm is good. If your not having any problems with it, there's no sense in changing to something else.

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

What would you say is the best FREE firewall? I use the net just for browsing, forums, newsgroups...
I don't play on-line games or anything so i just need a simple free firewall to keep all the malware out.

I'm using ZA and i haven't had any problems. I wasn't able to ping my server and couldn't find the answer .So COMODO was the one I installt instead .
My computer got so slow and froze after a few minutes . After reading some Articles about comodo ( only for powerful and newer computers ) , I decided to load ZA again,
and everything was fine . Must have been a hiccup in my old ZA .
Will use ZA in future like I did for years ,with only the last glitch where negative .

Rgds

outback 46

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

Going to have a look tonight if i get a chance.

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

I've read lots of good reviews of it. And it gets flying colors on the leaktests. I'm planning to give a try when I get a chance.

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

Have you guys ever heard of COMODO?

I'm using their firewall and antivirus now and I'm loving it very much now...doesn't hog up much resources on your PC plus it protects you for FREE!

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

I've tried about 4 or 5 firewalls in the last year.
The most recent one was the McAfee firewall. I did not like that even on the highest security level, Tight Security, it defaults to allowing Internet Explorer and svchost.exe to Full Access, which means it allows unsolicted incoming communications to them. When I changed it to Outgoing only, it would change it back on reboot. On the McAfee forum, they told me that was by design. And I was told that when you leave it on automatic (I had it turned off), where it self configures the applications, it gives ALL allowed applications Full Access.

The Norton firewall seems to work OK if you take it off automatic and then remove server (incoming) access on each application. But it is a resource hog.

I guess my favorite right now is the Sunbelt Kerio firewall. But I've read that it fails most of the leaktests. While that seems important to me, some people seem to believe it is not. Any opinions on this?

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

I've seen all too many problems caused by Zone Alarm over the years,i personally would'nt touch it.

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

Ok I have gone through many many firewalls so here's my opinion:

BlackIce:

Slowed down my computer a lot... much propoganda for a mediocre firewall.

Kaspersky:

Haven't used but have heard nothing but good things.

Zone Alarm Security Suite:

Pure excellence. Blocked everything without much user input.

Kerio:

Once you install in advanced mode there's no going back. Uninstalled / reinstalled many times, just too many alerts.

Sygate:

Good firewall but not too user friendly with the alerts. Unless you know a lot about ports and windows processes some of the alerts are confusing and potentially dangerous.

Overall I say for those looking for an easy to use good firewall should go with Zone Alarm Security Suite. The virus / anti-spyware aren't the greatest but it's worth the money!

RE: The 'Best Firewall'

Product Documentation Kaspersky Anti-Hacker:
http://www.kaspersky.com/docs?downlink=170713175

You'll need Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader installed, the above is in pdf format:

Adobe Reader(Freeware):
http://www.download.com/3000-2378-10000062.html

Foxit Reader(Freeware):
http://www.download.com/Foxit-PDF-Reader/3000-2079_4-10313206.html
