I tried to open it via task manager, it opens and freezes up there too. It seems the disc spins, reads, then stops spinning after a while. I was also able to "read" the disc but it would not open the exe prog. and while doing all this it takes an enormous amoun of time to even open the page, that is if it opens.

I'm getting frustrated.....please....any idea?

RE: slow, very slow to start up and won't open...

Try this:
Place the Linksys install disk into the cd-rom drive.
Click Start/Run,type the following into the 'Open:' space,then press OK
D:\setup.exe
If your cd-rom drive is using a different drive letter,edit the above.

RE: slow, very slow to start up and won't open...

Hi again and TY for your diligence.....I downloaded the autoplay repair to a memory stick and loaded it into the ailing computer. I tried to run it in safe mode and it didn't go. Then I rebooted and tried to run it in normal and it goes as far as the choose the drive screen and freezes there...I have been waiting here for over 5 minutes for something to happen and all that is going on is I'm getting older....(I'm trying to keep my humor and spirits up). The hour glass isn't even turning but the task manager says it is running....?
what to do, please..
Hold the fort...It finally did something, what, I have no idea. I rebooted and lo..same slow stuff and lack of response when trying to open programs. I have a log for you to look at too...
AutoFix [V5.2.3790.67]
Time [2008-05-14 20:37:42]
Microsoft Windows Version [5.1 (Service Pack 2) <2600>]
Test [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.] - Instance [N/A]:
Result [AutoStart Setting]: OK
Result [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.]: OK
Test [Policies] - Instance [C:\, Drive Type: 0]:
Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDrives]: OK {Absent}
Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]: OK {Absent}
Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: OK {Present}
Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDrives]: OK {Absent}
Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]: Problems {Present}
Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: Problems {Present}
>> Repair << [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]
Step: Resetting policy HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer!NoDriveAutorun to 0x03FFFFFB.
Result: This AutoPlay setting was successfully fixed.
>> Repair << [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]
Step: Resetting policy HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer!NoDriveTypeAutorun to 0x000000FE.
Result: This AutoPlay setting was successfully fixed.
>> Required action: The user must log off and log on again
RE: slow, very slow to start up and won't open...

The Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard scans your computer devices to find defective AutoPlay settings, and attempts to fix those it finds.
Download and run Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard [Validation Required]:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=C680A7B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en

RE: slow, very slow to start up and won't open...

Sir, I have the disc for the linksys wireless but the issue is the computer will not read it to load it....I have tried both cd drives to no avail. I deleted all other admin accounts except the new on. Also I shut down guest acct. Then I did the msconfig proceedure and unchecked all the boxes. Then the restart. As of now it took more than 14 minutes to do that and the computer is still loading. BTW, I have yet to connect it to the internet, all my responses and results of your directionsare posted with another computer. It appears that unchecking and restarting had no positive effect. What would you like to do next?
