I also had the same (unable to change background) problem and a Google search led me to your site. I downloaded the smitfraud.reg file and it fixed my problem. I was also having problems with spyware/viruses at the time the problem appeared. What a pain!! Many thanks for your help

I have a similar problem. What happens to mine is that everytime I shutdown my computer and turn it back on, the background I get is always BLACK. Then when I try to set my background to my "Internet Explorer Background" nothing happens. But when I set it to NONE, then my "Internet Explorer Background," it works! Happens everytime I shutdown. Help?

Download and install HijackThis.exe if you are able to.

Launch HijackThis and select 'Do a System Scan only'.When the scan is finished, the 'Scan' button will change to 'Save Log'. Now press the 'Save Log' button, and save the log to your desktop. Then 'copy and paste' that log into the Hijack This Logs forum,not here.

I tried downloading this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg
but it just gives me the values for all the keys. I can't actually download anything I can put on the desktop to double click. Any suggestions?

I don't know what kind of graphics chip you have. But NVIDIA quite often disables some desktop functionality and reroutes it through the desktop manager which is accessible through the advanced button on the display panel. For days I struggled with the info on my desktop being greyed. What I found was that I could change the settings but only through my desktop manager when it was enabled. If I disable the desktop manager, the display properties tabbed returned to normal. There are some other quirks with NVIDIA on display functionality, but I just wanted to throw this out there to those that didn't know as I didn't when I downloaded the nvidia drivers.

Go here: download this registry fix from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg
Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

After the merged successfully prompt,Reboot your computer.

Are you able to change your desktop back to normal now?

All the Tabs are evident. My particular problem relates to the Desktop tab. I had many more choices of "Backgrounds" than before. It's not a critical issue but an issue none the less.

Can you explain exactly what your problem is in Display Properties,have you got some of the tabs missing,are you stuck in the Classic Theme and can't change it back to XP Style,under 'Windows and Buttons'.
