Had the same frustrating problem. Got the Error 1083 after using the [b]fix.bat[/b]. Ran across this page. [url]http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm[/url]
Using the same procedure as the fix.bat I made a [b]help.bat[/b] of the following.

net stop helpsvc
cd /d %windir%\pchealth\helpctr
rd packagestore /s /q
rd installedskus /s /q
cd binaries
start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install
start /w helpsvc /register

Copied and pasted into notepad and named it [b]help.bat[/b]. Ran it from the desktop and wahlaa! Help and Support is [b]BACK[/b]. I had about given up when I made the help.bat. This was the last thing I did before getting the Help and Support back so I'm [b]assuming[/b] this did the trick.:hehe:
Slowly, gluing hair back on head after pulling most of it out.:crazy:
I can only hope this helps somebody else.

thanks richie i have tried all that you said except for the XP CD thing cause can't find my CD :crying:and even visited the site but still no luck thanks anyway but if there's any other suggestion keep me posted thanks again

Make sure first the 'Help and Support' service is indeed 'started',and is set to 'Automatic'.

Click on Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok.
Scroll down and find the service called 'Help and Support'
When you find it, double-click on it.
In the next window that opens, click the Start(If it's not already started) button, then change the Startup Type to Automatic(If not set to Automatic).
Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Reboot.

Did you try these:

Copy and paste the following bold green text in between the lines only, into Notepad,click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as..Save as Type: 'All Files (*.*)' File name: fix.bat to your desktop.Then click on the fix.bat file on your desktop to run it,click Ok three times.

Reboot.

cd %SystemRoot%\system32
regsvr32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\jscript.dll
regsvr32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\vbscript.dll
regsvr32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\mshtml.dll
..................................................................................

Go to Folder Options>View tab,and enable 'Show Hidden files and Folders',then press Apply>Ok.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\inf, right click pchealth.inf 'Install',have your xp cd handy.

If still no joy,go Here and scroll down to Help and Support,you'll probably find a fix there.

thanks richie i've visited the site, the error 1803 has been resolve but when I click on the Help and Support link nothing happens.

I can't start Help and Support service on Local Computer. An error message appears like this " Error 1083 : The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service."

can anybody please help me i'm a newby here please!!!

Installing the pchealth.inf what does that acutally do? I just tried it restarted and it didnt seem to do anything.This is a vexing problem!

Try this:
Go to Folder Options>View tab,and enable 'Show Hidden files and Folders',then press Apply>Ok.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\inf, right click pchealth.inf 'Install',have your xp cd handy.

If still no joy,go Here and scroll down to Help and Support,you'll probably find a fix there.

I did everything you said went back to services.msc and still gave me the same error when I tried to start the process.

and followed the instructions rebooted and help and support is now listed in services, yet when I went to start the service I get this error."could not start the help and support service on the local computer. error 1083: the executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service." I have no idea what that means.
