| with one HDD, CD-ROM and CD-RW
Is it HDD and CD-ROM on the same IDE and the CD-RW alone on another one
or
HDD alone on his IDE and the CD-ROM and CD-RW on the other one as master and slave
I can't decice what's best so i'm asking you how you feel about it
Gooday all

| I would have the HDD and the CD_ROM on one channel and the CD-RW on the secondary channel on its own.

| I have my CD-RW and DVD-ROM on the same channel. I am about to change that though. I just got my new "round IDE" cable to put the DVD on its own channel. I have SATA hard drives so no IDE HD here, lol. I would put the burner on its own as miltonroad stated.

| What is the main reason why it's best to have HDD and CD-ROM on the same channel
I'm having problem burning right now, mainly the reason is can not perform fixation and i'm trying to find a solution for that.
Maybe it's that i have both CD and burner on the same channel
Thanks

| I'd only put the burner on stand alone if were to primarily use the computer for on-the-fly copying.
Those reasonings about putting a CD-ROM alongside the HDD stem from the old days when hard drives worked at the same speed as CD-ROMs. But most CD-ROMs nowadays work at UDMA/33, while hard disks have evolved to UDMA/100-133.
You will not really notice the slow-down when doing regular office work, but you will when editing, grabbing, Photoshopping, burning from HD to CD, etc.
In general, it's always best to have everything on Master and nothing Slave but that's impossible if you don't have a third or a fourth channel available. But separate IDE controllers and even motherboards with built-in RAID (which can be used as regular IDE channels) are fairly cheap now.
Ideal set up:
IDE 1 M: CD-RW
IDE 2 M: CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
IDE 3 M: HDD 1
IDE 4 M: HDD 2

| My DVD lags in movies when the burner is on the same channel. I don't really think its best to have anything on the hard drive's channel. If you must have two one one channel, I suggest swapping them until you find the right setup that won't cause problems. I did that and finally just bought SATA drives and removed the IDE hard drive completely. That is not an option for everyone though. I am not going to ramble on anymore. I have just got in from work about an hour ago, lol. Best of luck BluesMan.

| Thanks Tom and Eliot.
My HDD is alone by himself and the CD and Burner on the second channel. I don't believe that is creating any kind of problems but i'm trying to find a solution for my burning problem (Nero) also but my configuration does not seem to be the problem right now.
Will keep working on it
