When I try to make a Ghost 2003 backup of my laptop, Toshiba Satellite Pro M10-S405, using its built in CDRW drive, it runs for a few minutes, copying about 28MB worth of files, then it gives

Application error 12020. Write to CD-r disc failed.

I tried all the applicable suggestions in the 2 knowledge base articles for this error message , including the following:

Checked for Ghost updates, tried various brands of discs, tried it on all three compression settings, checked that the BIOS is not set for power saving on the CD drive, made a startup floppy that uses MS-DOS, not PC-DOS.

When I looked at answers Symantec gave to others with this problem, their standard answer was that it was not a supported cdrw drive, so too bad.

I was wondering if anyone here was able to get around this.

Thanks

from the best ghost info site ever in existance, there is 3 links for failed CD writes on this here page

http://ghost.radified.com/ghost_caveat.htm

because i use a crusty old version , i would ask some strange  things, can you reduce the speed of write to the cdrw in ghost software?

did you defrag and then chkdsk the partition to see if its a sector error on the drive, If its a sector error on the drive, did you want to try and IGNORE sector errors, cause that is one of the MANY options that can be done in the options section

also you can turn off int13 calls, its slower but more compatable with everything , in the options.

then could you defrag then chkdsk the disk with that /r option and have the MS thing sort out and disk errors before recording.

OK, so i am Guessing, but i try hard

thanks for the ideas.  I tried them all (except the int13 one, did not see that option).

I just decided to work around  the problem.  I used Partition Magic to create another partition, and had Ghost put the image files there in 680 MB chunks, then copied them to CD's.

I have been using Plextor's CD-ResQ for several years, and it's the forerunner of Ghost. Every now and then I get the "Application Error 12020" message, and the fix that works for me is to try again, but without using compression in the backup.

I've never had the error message occur when backing up with no compression.
