Almost every "internet stealth" program has a component that "bleaches" index. dat files. In other words, these files are written over with randon numbers approximately 12 times before finally being deleted. The idea behind this is so that no undelete program can possibly recover these files, no matter how complex or expensive. This leads me to my question. Does anyone know of a program (a free one if i can get it) that will allow me to "bleach" any file on my hard drive? (I have me reasons for wanting to do so).

The files can always be recovered, just that the process becomes more complex, but it can be done. I have no idea what a good program for this is, but this one looks OK, http://www.safechaos.com/cs.htm. Just remember that the DOD burns their harddrives when they are done with them.

Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me.

Blade,

As with most types of utilities, there is a bewildering number of choices when you want a utility to wipe files so well that it becomes prohibitively expensive for anybody to retrieve what was there before, and you want to do the wiping quickly and easily.

SureDelete is one I've used and am happy with. It comes with two utilities: a context menu choice lets you shoot a file to SureDelete-File for multi-overwrites before deletion (with an added confirmation dialog, cuz you'll NEVER get that file back once you've let SureDelete overwrite it), and another utility called SureDelete-Disk (not in any context menu, of course) that will let you wipe a whole drive or just the "empty space" on a drive.

Be careful with any program that does multi-overwrites of significant space on a drive: it can take a loooooong time.

I really like the SureDelete-File utility. I work a lot with documents that involve Non-Disclosure Agreements, and it's imperative that I do everything possible (but reasonable) to protect deleted copies of those documents from snoopers. When I'm done with the file and have burned it to a CD, a right click on the filename and a choice of Send To, SureDelete, brings up the confirmation, and then it takes anywhere from a few secs to a couple of minutes, depending on the size of the file, before the filename disapppears from Explorer. It never goes to the RecBin, by the way.

Anyway, it's a freebie and worth a look:

SureDelete

Blade2251 I know you stated that you were looking for a free util, but I thought I would mention two excellent chargeable programs anyway - just for you to have a quick look at.

Windows Washer - can add bleach to wash + not too expensive, www.webroot.com

Evidence Eliminator - This is more thorough and comes with a bigger price tag, www.evidence-eliminator.com
