The link above is the thread that got me started on the idea of buying a new hard drive. To sum it up, I have reason to beleive that my current hd is about to die on me and i now want to add a second hard drive. My current hard drive is a 60GB Maxtor HD. It's setup as the primary master and then slaved to it is my zip drive. What i want to do is to buy a larger hd for my master and then slave my old hard drive and my zip drive. Here's the questions i have about what needs to be done to do this. Feel free to add anything you want about the subject since i have never installed a new hard drive before and i probably should be asking many more questions.

Q: How exactly do i slave 2 hard drives and a zip drive? I've only seen ide cables for 2 devices so what do i need to do to have all these devices on the same ide cable?

Q: Will i need a windows XP disk to set up my new hard drive?
Unfortunately someone else built my computer and didn't give me the disk (i know now that this was pretty shady and i need the disk). I was planning on buying my own windows xp disk when school started because i know most universities offer discounts on software to students. Would i be able to share a copy of windows xp with my gf?(we live together)

Q: Will i run into problems because i want to make my new hard drive the primary?
I want to eventually transfer everything over from my old hard drive to my new one and then use the 60GB hard drive i have for backups/extra files or whatever else.

I've been doing some reading. With my new hard drive i was thinking about going to a raid configuration but i'm not sure if my current hard drive supports this type of format. Can i have one raid drive and one eide drive? Also, to run my new drives and still keep my zip drive do i need to purchase a control card for my 2 drives? Sorry for all the questions but this is all new to me so i'm very confused.

EDIT: Opened up my computer to check exactly what HD i had. I have a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus D740X.

1.  You don't put three drives on the same cable.  Each controller will only support two drives.

2.  You will need to reinstall XP once you set up the new drive as the primary.  You will need your own CD.   Sharing is against the law.

3.  You can use any kind of drive for RAID.  Your drive controller must support it though.

4.  Today's motherboards support 4 IDE devices.  If you only have one CD drive then you can have two hard drives and your ZIP drive.

i have 2 cd rom drives. I'm reading my mobo manual now and i have sata connections. can i just buy a new hard drive and connect it to that connection?

also i'm not quite sure what raid is, but i've seen many people say that there drives are configured that way. I really just don't know what i'm talking about but i know at the end of all this i want to use my new HD (probably a sata 120 gb 8mb cache Maxtor HD) as my main hd with the 60gb hard drive i have now as a backup.... i just need to figure out how now. thanks for the help so far.

Here's a link to the drive i'm looking at

Basically what i'm still trying to figure out after all the stuff i've been reading about is how can i configure the new hard drive i get and what exactly i need to buy to do this. As far as installation and all that goes i can figure it out when the time comes.

I'd go with the new SATA drive if I were you. Since your mobo supports it, and you need a new drive anyway, it's pretty much a no-brainer. If you decide on the SATA drive, you need to make sure your power supply has an SATA power connector. If it doesn't, you'll have to buy an SATA power adapter. Other than that, you should be good to go.

Are you saying that i won't need to modify my current configuration any? I just need to plug the hd in to the SATA connector, install it and i'll be set up? If i'm understanding things thats the way it is. Now just to decide for sure which drive. I want the Maxtor because its what i have always had, but i've heard people say good things about western digital too.... ugh, so many choices.

Well, if you want the SATA drive to be your system drive, you'll need to format it, then install XP onto it, of course. But, yes, you will be able to leave your other drives where they are now.

And - as far as brand names, both that you mentioned are equally as good as one another. But if you want my opinion (for what it's worth), I'd take a look at the Seagate Barracuda SATA drive. It's probably a notch above WD and Maxtor.
